NOEW 2012
|
The Idea Village's 4th annual Entrepreneur Season culminated on March 16 with the New Orleans Entrepreneur Week (NOEW) bash on Fulton Street. The nationally recognized entrepreneurial festival celebrates and supports the network of talent that has catapulted New Orleans to the top of the list of cities that are becoming hubs for entrepreneurship and innovation. For seven straight days and nights, we hosted nationally renowned venture capitalists, angel investors, business professionals, corporate volunteers and policy leaders. Participants came together to support local entrepreneurs and the growing New Orleans entrepreneurial eco-system.
We also received encouraging comments from James Coulter, co-founder of Texas Pacific Group (TPG) in 1992 and a major supporter of NOEW, who said, "New Orleans underestimates how much people want to live here."
 |
Prior to co-founding Texas Pacific Group, Mr. Coulter worked for Keystone Inc. and for Lehman Brothers Kuhn Loeb. He received an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 1986.
|
TPG is based in San Francisco and is often asked about how to create the next Silicon Valley. He mentioned that the president of Stanford University receives unsolicited bids to set-up operations in cities large and small.
Many of Mr. Coulters comments were similar to those of Christopher A. Viehbacher, Chief Executive Officer of the French pharmaceutical company Sanofi, SA and the newly acquired Genzyme Corp., founded in Cambridge, MA. Mr. Coulter talked about how the innovation ecosystem must be in place to support the growing class of new entrepreneurs, "At the end of the day, it's about the entrepreneur. It's about the whole ecosystem that makes the entrepreneur successful." Corporate leaders like Coulter and Viehbacher, who established a presence in the Boston area because of its innovation ecosystem, are telling us the truth. While the future of cutting-edge or disruptive technology may be found in small labs run by entrepreneurs, big corporations with the marketing channels and access to capital are going to be the ones to take it to the global market. The BioDistrict will undertake a series of actions to build the infrastructure of opportunity and maximize the community benefit for New Orleanians around local university research and catalytic projects like the VA, UMC and the BioInnovation and Cancer Research Centers. Gone are the days where people drive in, park on surface and leave when the day is done. The new order is to encourage people to live nearby in a built environment that encourages health and prosperity.
Action Plan
- Continue BioDistrict Operational and Capital Funding
- Forge Successful Partnerships: City / State / Federal Institutions, Foundations and Business Community
- Detailed Site Studies: Utilities, Parking, Downtown Health Campus, Claiborne Avenue, and Traffic Management
- Recruit New Biopharmaceutical Investments and Partnerships
- Public / Private Partnership Financing of specialized buildings
- Implement Academic Research Database System
- Identify Key Catalytic Projects

BioDistrict & Sustainability BioDistrict participated in this year's Water Challenge and the Water Institute activities as part of our mission to bring more research, investment and jobs to the community.
The Biodistrict believes a business sector combined with university research innovation will assist in retaining our current economic base while fostering growth in the biosciences sector that includes sustainable industries and water management. This can be seen in the case of the Washington Palmetto Avenue Canal, which was designed to drain the central and uptown sections of New Orleans. Many believe the canal is the cause of accelarated soil subsidence in the affected areas. The long term impact on the Gert Town and surrounding communities has been significant.
 | Xavier University and the Washington Palmetto Canal |
There is ample research and technology on water management being developed at Tulane, Xavier and UNO. We believe that our proposed plan for the Washington Palmetto Canal is the perfect demonstration project to show how to "live with water", a point raise by Senator Mary Landrieu (LA, D) at last week's Water Challenge 2012.
- For an example of the connection between the river water shed and the BioDistrict as seen through a similar initiative in Portland, OR and the A|E Firm of ARUP click here.
