BioDistrict is in alignment with Governor Jindal, LED and the Board of Regents plans for growth
BioDistrict, it's university partners and the NOLA business community have a great deal to offer to create and then sustain long term growth
|
Gov Bobby Jindal speaking on economic development and LED's Blue Ocean Strategy that includes in part the BioDistrict
|
The activities of the BioDistrict have created an unprecedented opportunity for economic growth. For the first time, there is alignment between the long term plans of the Governor, the Board of Regents, Louisiana Economic Development, LSU, Tulane, Xavier, and Delgado on how to leverage the catalytic construction into long term growth and job creation. The long term planning of the BioDistrict will soon pay off!
The recommendation of the recently completed comprehensive analysis of university research strengths, which considers both the available business inducements and public & private investments, is that the BioDistrict concentrate its economic development activities into four key sectors where there are substantial growth opportunities. These areas are: 1) Industrial, including pharmaceutical manufacturing; 2) Digital Medicine\Informatics, including infectious disease mapping and electronic health records; 3) Medical, including research and development, regenerative and destination healthcare; and 4) Environmental, including sustainability and green industries.
The BioDistrict is governed by a 15 member Board of Commissioners.

BioDistrict Gains Major Endorsement! BioDistrict has earned a reputation as an aggressive economic development agency focused on creating jobs and opportunities for New Orleanians
New Orleans is home to two health science centers, a school of dentistry, a major college of pharmacy and a nationally ranked community college, producing thousands of doctors, nurses and allied health professionals spanning several generations.
As pointed out in CityBusiness, what you won't find in New Orleans is "a burgeoning business sector that thrives off the intellectual capital these institutions produce. Although an entity has been created to foster growth in the biosciences sector, it doesn't have the resources to carry out its objective."
Time for all of us to dig deep and make the commitment to build a bioscience industry in New Orleans!

 BioDistrict and the Knowledge Economy
BioDistrict is focused on creating and growing the infrastructure of opportunity for New Orleanians -- the entire Community Wins!
In the last issue we discussed the Built Environment as one encompassing all buildings, spaces and products that are created, or modified, by people. It includes workplaces, business areas and infrastructure to create and support economic opportunity! There is a growing belief that the only way to truly solve the crime issue is through a paycheck. Developing the support infrastructure of workforce training, university-driven innovation, entrepreneurial training, and a diverse supply chain within a healthy neighborhood with world class facilities is the only way to create the "premier destination for healthcare and bioscience research". All of this is part of the State's plan which, if approved, will be useful in attracting new R&D facilities and headquarters to the district. Further, the City Of New Orleans recently adopted a Land Use Plan which provides the community with an area centrally located for the development of world class facilities. Moreover, these new facilities will support additional housing and retail locations within the District that will benefit a much larger community. We envision S. Galvez from Tulane Ave. to Poydras Street to be the home of a number of new facilities for the bioscience industry. Amongst those to be built will be a new center for the acceleration and development of new start-up and expanding small\medium bioscience companies.

Future South Galvez Research Corridor
|
The corridor will replace older light industrial manufacturing and warehouse properties with high tech smart buildings within a walkable neighborhood connecting Mid-City, the Lafitte Greenway, the VA, the University Medical Center and downtown. To learn more, click here.
