Convention a Huge Success!
AURP
BioDistrict New Orleans Hosted AURP
Developing the Culture of Innovation and Entrepreneurship

The 2011 Association of University Research Parks convention in New Orleans was a resounding success in so many ways. The number of first-time attendees skyrocketed, illustrating the growing interest in New Orleans and the emerging bioscience industry. We oversold rooms at the Ritz Carlton and spilled over into two other hotels -- helping our friends in the hospitiality industry as the group spread out over town.

The 265 international attendees heard from the Honorable Mitchell Landrieu on the importance of New Orleans to the country and the world and how we are working to become the city of the future. His candid comments set a positive tone for the convention and focused the group on finding solutions to supercharge our innovation economy.  Attendees of the conference also got the opportunity to tour the BioDistrict, the BioInnovation Center and the Louisiana Cancer Research Center.

Spotlighting the Bioscience Industry
Electronic Healthcare Records Market Will Reach $8.3 billion by 2016

The market for EHR records is poised to reach $8.3 billion in 2016 as health groups scramble to meet the meaningful use mandates to avoid Medicare penalties by 2015, according to a Millennium Research Group report. The EHR market has also ushered in a large number of new vendors, which may not be viable over the long term, the report notes (Health Data Management 11/10).

In light of Louisiana's aggressive Digital Media Tax Credit and the availability of office space, these vendors are prime candidates for the BioDistrict New Orleans. If you are a property owner interested in learning more, contact us today.

BioDistrict New Orleans is proud to recognize Dr. Larry H. Hollier in this issue's Board Member Spotlight. Dr. Hollier has served as Chancellor of LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans since Nov. 14, 2005. Comprising six health professions schools, LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans educates Louisiana's health workforce, research scientists and public health policymakers. Dr. Hollier is also a practicing vascular surgeon.

Dr. Hollier was President and Chief Operating Officer of The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York before being recruited to lead his alma mater, the School of Medicine at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans, where he earned his medical degree in 1968 and was named Chief Resident in Surgery in 1974. Following a brief stint in the U.S. Air Force, Dr. Hollier entered academic medicine with an appointment to the LSUHSC faculty in 1975.

Dr. Hollier was appointed Dean on January 1, 2004. During his first 18 months, he reorganized the Dean's office and redefined fiscal control of the School of Medicine. He implemented mission based budgeting, aligning pay with performance, and allowing reallocation of an additional $7 million to support the basic science and translational research efforts. As a result of the increased growth of research, the school's NIH funding increased over 50%. Dr. Hollier continued to serve as both Chancellor and Dean of Medicine until September 2007 when he appointed Dr. Steve Nelson as Dean of Medicine.

Dr. Hollier is certified by the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery and in General Vascular Surgery. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Cardiology, the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, Scotland.

In addition to being a lecturer on vascular and endovascular surgery, Dr. Hollier is the author of more than 300 journal articles and has served on the editorial boards of 13 surgical journals.

DID YOU KNOW? THE BIODISTRICT CURRENTLY HAS 70,000 PEOPLE WORKING IN THE DISTRICT?
But where and how do I connect with the employers and the opportunities?

BioDistrict New Orleans has created a special group on LinkedIn called Bio New Orleans where professionals and employers can post job opportunities, discuss research findings or industry trends and network with other professionals in the biosciences industry.

As of today, we have posted six new job openings and more will follow as the community builds. In five weeks, more than 139 multi-disciplined professionals have joined and started sharing ideas, leads, knowledge and contacts. This is how clusters are formed, thrive and take on a life of their own.
