BioDistrict New Orleans to Host AURP
Developing the Culture of Innovation and Entrepreneurship

The New Orleans Convention is gearing up to one of the best ever. The first time attendees have skyrocketed which shows the growing interest in New Orleans and what we are doing to rejuvenate this city. We have oversold rooms at the Ritz Carlton and are now spilling over into two other hotels.

Our can't-miss lineup of speakers includes:

Mitchell J. Landrieu,
Mayor, The City of New Orleans

Mayor Mitch Landrieu was sworn in as the 61st Mayor of New Orleans on May 3, 2010 and has pledged to usher in a new era of peace and prosperity for the people of New Orleans. After Hurricane Katrina, Landrieu led the effort to rebuild the tourism industry and the thousands of jobs it creates. And when other government agencies failed, his team got more than $22 million in grant money from Congress into the hands of hundreds of homeowners quickly. During his tenure, he focused on creating jobs and launched the Cultural Economy initiative to grow jobs through our culture, music, food, film and art. The cultural economy accounts for 144,000 jobs in the State of Louisiana.

Richard A. Bendis, Publisher, Innovation Daily

Why is building the expanded Broadband infrastructure so critically important?
Innovations in medical technology will change the medical field.

By now, you have heard that Louisiana has lost out on $80 million of Stimulus funds and thus the opportunity to build a network that would have served the entire state including many communities that do not share in the advanced bandwidth. But why is the infrastructure so critical?

Healthcare and Medical Research

Advancements in medical devices have made your ordinary cell phone a tool for medical care and research. Recently, California Institute of Technology (Caltech) researchers announced they have designed a lensless, super-resolution cell culture imaging system from smartphones. The system provides a simple and affordable super-resolution microscopy technique for cell biologoists and one day your personal physician.
I phone devices
ePetri Dish

The prototype device dubbed the ePetri Dish, plugs into a smart phone uses a chip-scale imaging technique. The light source moves under over the grown cells and sends digital shadows through a broadband connection in the form of a high-resolution image from a super-resolution algorithum - think NASA images from deep space on a nanoscale.

In BioDistrict presentations, we have spoken about the need to build the District for the science and innovation of tomorrow not the '90s. Professionals recognize the importance of advances like the ePetri dish: "They've managed to harness the power of these techniques in a very controlled scenario," said Peyman Milanfar, University of California, Santa Cruz professor of electrical engineering and editor of Super-Resolution Imaging, who was not involved in the study. "As a result they're able to use a relatively simple version of super-resolution to get really impressive results."

DID YOU KNOW: THE BIODISTRICT IS PROJECTING MORE THAN 17,200 NEW OR RETAINED JOBS?
But where and how do I connect with the employers and the opportunities?

BioDistrict New Orleans has created a special group on LinkedIn called Bio New Orleans where professionals and employers can post job opportunities, discuss research findings or industry trends and network with other professionals in the biosciences industry.

As of today, we have posted six new jobs openings and more will follow as the community builds. In five weeks, more than 123 (a 64 percent increase week-over-week) multi-disciplined professionals have joined and started sharing ideas, leads, knowledge and contacts.
