BioDistrict Health Education Campus - Update Based on our poll results, 93 percent agree!
As discussed in our last issue, AECOM, the BioDistrict Master Planner, proposes the creation of a Health Education Campus where students, faculty and the bioscience community can co-mingle and where employers will be able to train, recruit and provide life long learning for their current and future employees.
Why is that so important? After all we have hospitals now?
Consider this:
- BioDistrict New Orleans is at the intersection of two fast growing employment sectors - health care and education
- Education employment is expected to grow 2.4% per year over the next 7 years
- Health care employment is expected to grow 2.3% per year over the next 7 years
- Allied health care accounts for 60% of health care employment, which puts health education at the heart of job growth

The challenge was expressed by Mr. Mark Singletary, the President and publisher of New Orleans CityBusiness and Board Member of GNO, Inc., who said: "As these amazing high-tech medical and bio-research centers come on line, it's obvious that workforce development is going to be an issue for years to come. This area will be attracting technicians, scientists and medical professionals, but also a huge support staff that must be trained and trainable. It's both an opportunity and an incredible challenge."
To meet this challenge, BioDistrict New Orleans proposes the construction of an expanded Delgado College, a Math and Science High School, a GED testing center and a Digital School for the emerging digital media industry that includes bioinformatics, gene and infectious disease mapping and electronic health records.
Earlier this year, AECOM and the BioDistrict sponsored a Symposium with key members of our university partners, including LSU, Tulane, Xavier, Delgado, Dilliard SUNO and UNO. We learned about the impact creating the "right kind of place" will have on collaborations and continuing education. Here is a diagram of what a shared space will look like:

Dr. Oz Visits the BioDistrict
Sponsored by Evamor Water, a New Orleans-based healthy product
Recently, Dr. Mehmet Oz, America's Doctor and Founder of HealthCorps visited New Orleans and the BioDistrict. While he was here Dr. Oz spoke to a joint meeting of the students and faculty of the Math & Science and McDonogh 35 High Schools about the importance of choice. Dr. Oz believes the best medicine is good nutrition, proper exercise and a goal for yourself. He spoke about the need to become an advocate for change within the city and one's own family. Dr. Oz encouraged the audience to believe in themselves, visualize a goal and set about achieving it.
After a short visit to a resident of the Lower 9 Make it Right homes, Dr. Oz met with City Health Commissioner Karen DeSalvo and a number of Tulane's School of Public Health where he discussed the general condition of the city's poor and uninsured. He heard some positive news about the changes underway and how the city was able to open 88 new neighborhood clinics following Hurricane Katrina. Dr. Oz and his HealthCorp team committed to remain involved and follow-up on several initiatives concerning nutrition and healthy lifestyle.

Later in the day, Dr. Oz visited with Commissioner Larry Hollier, MD and Chancellor of the LSUHSC, where he reviewed the BioDistrict Master Plan, got an update on the University Medical Center planning and construction. He was impressed with the vision for the BioDistrict, to create a livable community where people walked or took modern transit to work, where new retail would flourish to support the neighborhood and the employment centers. It fits what he believes are the critical elements of a healthy lifestyle.
As we toured LSUHSC, it is clear this institution is providing the leadership in educating the physicians of tomorrow's Louisiana. They have made comprehensive modifications and additions to their program, like the state-of-the-art Student Learning Center and Simulation Center, where students will learn in small groups the connections between the basic sciences, clinical practice and cutting edge research. LSUHSC has invested in advanced simulation technologies to allow for the practice of difficult procedures before actually ever performing them on patients. These same simulators are available for life long continuous learning and training by medical professionals.
