COMMISSIONER'S CORNER

As I write this submission for Commissioners Corner, I cannot help but think of the severe economic downturn we are experiencing in our country, political uncertainty and general lack of direction felt by many of our citizens. It clearly is not an easy time for our families, workers and small businesses.
There is, however, some good news for Wayne County about the future as long as people take advantage of opportunities to prepare for the jobs of the future. New models of education and job training are being offered locally. Partnerships between WEDCO, our school districts, Workforce Wayne, the libraries, our Chamber of Commerce, higher education, the county and employers have created opportunities for our people to meet the workforce needs of the future.
Four-year degrees are fine but may not be for everyone. Technical skills, hands on learning and real world practical education targeted toward a particular job skill will be the driver of the economic engine of the future. Whether it is a 1 or 2-year technical degree, a commercial driver license, or a certificate program, these positions are in demand. You will be in demand and this is a great position to be in for better employment prospects with better wages and benefits in your future.
Your family will benefit from higher earnings and opportunities will be opened to you as a highly trained worker. Business too will benefit from an increased pool of qualified applicants to meet the challenges of tomorrow. Our entire community will benefit as more of our young people find work here, raise families here and can earn a good living here.
I truly believe that the economy of our country will come roaring back within a few years as our political situation changes and America's federal and state budgets get on a firmer footing. Business will then be much more comfortable investing and creating jobs. The real question then is will you be ready to take advantage of new opportunities. The time to prepare is now. You and your family can participate in a great economic recovery if you take charge of your future with new skills or training. I am very excited about all the good things we have to look forward to in America and I hope to participate in this outstanding comeback along with millions of others.

Day 3: Friday, March 16, 2012 Dublin

Your day begins with a locally guided sightseeing tour of Dublin. Visit St. Patrick's Cathedral, built in honor of Ireland's patron saint. Built adjacent to the famous well where St. Patrick was said to baptize converts, a church was built on this site in 1191 and the present Cathedral, a place of great architectural and historic significance, was completed in 1220. Next, continue on to O'Connell Street, Grafton Street, Phoenix Park and see the city's magnificent rows of stately Georgian town homes. The remainder of the day is yours to relax or explore the cultural offerings of delightful Dublin on your own.
Gather a group of family and friends or make it a trip for you and your honey. Then head to Ireland to find your lucky four-leaf clover and visit one of the most charming cultures in the world. OCTOBER IS "CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MONTH"
There are over 240 Local Chambers of Commerce representing more than 250,000 businesses/organizations in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. These chambers work to promote business, community, and the well-being of all citizens. The individuals working at these chambers are united to advance commercial, financial, industrial and civic interest of its members and citizens.
Here at the Wayne County Chamber we strive to promote and address the needs of our members. We have several annual events during October. The Community Awards Banquet where businesses and individuals who have shown excellence in their business endeavors or dedication to our community are honored. Blue Cross of NEPA recognizes a small & large business with the "Healthy Workplace Award" for establishing healthy initiatives of their employees. This year a new category, "Green Business of the Year" was established, partnering with S.E.E.D.S of NEPA(Sustainable Energy Education & Development Support).
Additionally, Apple Day Spa & Hair Restoration Salon and Tick-Tocks will host a Tri-Chamber Business Card Exchange on Tuesday, October 18th from 5:30 to 7:30pm. An excellent opportunity for members to introduce themselves to other community businesses and individuals. This event is open to the public, so be sure to bring a friend. Also, the Wayne County Chambers (Pocono Lake Region, Southern Wayne and Wayne County), and Pike County Chamber are planning their State-Level Legislative Breakfast for Friday, October 28th at 7:30am at Ehrhardt's Waterfront Resort. At this venue, legislators will address your questions or concerns on the issues that are effecting the economic environment of Northeast Pennsylvania.
Finally, I feel these words by Ken Daley, Chairman of Ocala Marion County Chamber of Commerce rings true "every Chamber of Commerce that exists was formed to protect and promote commerce. Its primary reason is not for any single member's benefit, but rather, for members to benefit singularly due to the success of the whole. This year as we celebrate Chamber month, remember that our big picture mission is to create a long-term environment where Commerce is protected, promoted and where we can all experience the prosperity that a vibrant economy provides".

A MEMBER'S STORY
How did Julia Beyer, a wall street executive's wife of 26 years, end up in Starrucca owning and operating a quaint and cozy B&B called 'Maple Hill Farm' located along the shore of Shehawkin Lake?
Twenty years ago, in order to escape the high-stress environment of the city and be near Elk Mountain ski area, they purchased, unknown to her, what was at one time a guesthouse. Having received numerous calls for accommodation, Julia and her sister, Jane, decided to give it a whirl. However, after a few summers they determined the timing was not quite right. But for Julia, the seed was planted and over the years grew in her imagination, a dream she hoped would come true one day.
Having raised three children; Becky, Kurt and Will, and having been a full-time volunteer at their school; assisting with school activities, community events, fund raising and every now and then clean-up duty, Julia set the wheels in motion for a new challenge. This April the seed not only sprouted but blossomed, 'Maple Hill Farm B&B' was opened for business.
Julia had a definite plan, she wanted to create a setting where individuals or families could escape back to a simpler time. A time when you ate what you grew or raised, a time when chasing fireflies on a warm summer evening entertained kids for hours, a time when sitting by a lake listening to the frogs croak was relaxing, a time when reading a good mystery on the front porch swing was something you couldn't wait to do after the dinner dishes were done, a time...I think you get the picture. Although, having been a part of that high-tech, more is better life, she knew for some, they would have to be lead gently, subtly back in time.
Whether parents of campers, or Lake Shehawkin Community relatives and friends, Julia strives to take them back from the moment their foot touches the front porch. With some nudging, ipads, blackberries and the like are set aside as she settles them in to an atmosphere of total comfort with cozy accommodations including a snuggly feather-soft robe, a mattress fit for a queen and out to the front porch to take in the surroundings with a refreshing beverage of choice.
In the morning, the day starts with a humongous breakfast featuring Julia's signature dish 'Peach Stuffed French Toast', accompanied with maple chicken sausage. As well as, vegetarian and gluten-free foods, everyone will walk away from the table pleasantly satisfied. Dietary needs of all guests are addressed, advance notice of such, allows Julia to be prepared.

Maggie Arion
Next is a stroll about the farm to gather fresh eggs, meet the friendly goats, check-out the sprawling garden (all grown using organic practices) and get a peek at the piglets. Continuing the jaunt down the path to the breathtaking lake views and enjoy a canoe ride. As part of your stay you get a gentle, caring host with a desire to listen to your joys and struggles of everyday life. By the end of a stay, Julia hopes to have helped guests reconnect to each other, especially the family units. Also, to learn what the value of living well and healthy can mean to their overall happiness.

Assisting Julia at Maple Hill Farm are a number of local residents who she has hired to help with yardwork, laundry, gardening and most importantly Kathy Travis assisting in the kitchen, or in other words her right arm.

Julia Beyer, Owner Snowshoeing Fun
Although Julia is just getting started she is dreaming big, as a manner of speaking. In the future, she hopes to expand business to include specific retreats/workshops run by facilitators. Presently, she uses all organic cleaners and would like to buy 100% organic as product availability allows. Finally, and most importantly, to be a green sustainable farm; a cycle of seed > food > farm > guest > seed.
Maple Hill Farm Bed & Breakfast will be open year-round to not only accommodate those sun lovers but the snow bunnies as well. Elk Mountain is only 30 minutes away!
