My youngest son was diagnosed with food allergies as a baby and now at 2 1/2, he is allergic to milk, eggs and nuts. I've been blessed with a sister-in-law who is very knowledgeable about food allergies since she has experienced them first hand and because of her medical background.
She delivers great information through a facebook page, Food Allergy Aid, and talked with lots of Baby & Child Fest attendees at her booth last year.
Sherry has taken her desire to help other local food allergy families to a new level with the launch of the local Be A PAL Food Allergy Walk on September 15th.
New Orleans Baby & Child Fest is excited to join the walk as a sponsor!
Here's a Q&A with the coordinator, Sherry Langston.
Q. What made you decide to start the Be a PAL Walk in New Orleans?
A. "My two sons, my nephew and I suffer from life-threatening food allergies. My older son was diagnosed at 7 months old and is now 9.
Just 9 years ago, there was not an extensive amount if information or resources for the food-allergic community. I pioneered my way through and made the best of baking and ordering from the few companies who offered allergy-free products.
The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network was a constant in our lives - and still is to this day. I wanted to put together this walk to give the food allergy community a chance to come together and meet others who deal with this issue. I also feel like it is so important for kids to meet other kids who have allergies so they do not feel so alone! To my knowledge, there has not been a walk for this cause in New Orleans to date. We are looking forward to the walk and hope to see you all there! All of the profits raised will be donated to the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network!"
