HAPPY NEW YEAR...LET'S GET ORGANIZED!

 Happy New Year!

Clear Storage Bins
The new year usually brings resolutions. At the top of that list is ORGANIZATION for many families including mine!

I struggle daily to stay organized with two boys and small closets, but here's a tip I picked up along the way that I try to implement in my own home.
  1. BUY 10 CLEAR CONTAINERS - When you have your first child, buy about ten of the same containers with good tops that securely close. Buy them all at once, so they will be the same exact size and can fit into each other to store the empty ones AND so you will always have a new one available.
  2. OPEN CONTAINER IN CLOSET - Have at least one open container in your child's closet at all times. If you have room to stack more, just stack them in each other with the covers to the side. Keep the one on top open, so you always have access to adding outgrown clothes, socks and shoes to it throughout the season.
  3. LABEL IT - At the end of the season, label it with Summer or Winter and your child's clothing & shoe sizes. i.e. "JACK / SUMMER / 18-24 MONTHS / SHOE SIZE 5-6". Label on top and the side so it's easily visible if you stack the filled containers in the closet or attic. This has made it so easy to pull down containers at the right time for my second son.
  4. STORE IT - Close it up and store it for a future child or to give away to charity or consignment sale/shop. Don't forget that some consignment sales/stores just take seasonal clothing, so you may need to keep it a few months until the beginning of that season again, but this is much easier if it's all ready for the sale.
*Store special/heirloom clothing in separate and appropriate ways to keep them in the best condition possible.

The same can be done for toys and baby items:

  • TOYS - Have a container separate from the clothing one for toys that your child doesn't play with any more. A good method to follow is "One toy in, one toy out" to keep your kids' toys manageable...I wish I could follow that rule:) Label the toy containers according to age too.
  • BABY ITEMS - Have an additional container for baby items to pack away - bottles, nursing items, swaddling blankets, etc. - that you want to pack away during the first year or two.
By the way, I'm no expert! If you need expert help, it's available. Check out The Occasional Wife or Clutter Clearer - both local professional organizers!

Good luck!
