A Note from Not Home Alone
pets rescuing and rescuing petsJune 20, 2011
Greetings!

Last month's newsletter about dogs escaping and shelters seemed to flip on a switch.  This month I'm sharing three stories with you - one from a friend about her own rescue dog rescuing another dog and the other two about happy endings with forever-homes.

The Fourth of July is just around the corner.  Concerned about the commotion upsetting your pets?  You may want to review my February 2011 newsletter on pet anxiety for suggestions that may help.  You can access it through the archive link on my "Other Stuff" page.

While you're at my web site, please take a couple of minutes to enjoy Dorothy's slideshow.  Dorothy was adopted from the Pasadena Humane Society, and she's the pet in the spotlight this month.

Rescued Dog Rescues Dog

A friend sent me this story about their dog Otoro, a lovely, sweet Akita - and I enjoyed it so much that I want to share it with you:

Hi Christina,

Otoro and hisI thought you would enjoy this story about Otoro (our rescued dog).

Otoro knows his 3 acres very well and always goes out at dusk to take care of "business." Since he runs faster than we do, he gets a bit ahead of us but keeps his eye on us and listens for the word "come."

One night, instead of coming, he went down toward the creek. I called "come" and no Otoro. After the 3rd "come" we were getting worried, when up trotted Otoro with a
small Border Collie by his side. The little dog was shaking and scared but came happily up to us.

Both dogs followed us up to the house, where the very thirsty Collie had a big drink while we checked his collar for a tag. Luckily, there was one listing a pet rescue number. When we called, they called his owners - who were joyous to discover that someone had their dog
who got out when a visitor had left the gate open. "Diesel" had traveled from several canyons away thru dense brush and trees all day to turn up at our property and be rescued by a rescue dog!

Rosemary, Jack, Otoro, llamas, cats, chickens, pigeons, and now 2 dwarf goats.

And here's another happy ending...

BooBoo

While Ann and Gene were visiting family in nothern California, they visited a local shelter and fell in love with this little guy.

But there was a hold on him... So they came back home to southern California and waited for the call to let them know he was free to be adopted.  Then they made a second round trip up to northern California just to pick up BooBoo.

Another lucky dog with a loving forever-home!

A Forever Home for Brooke

We decided we wanted to rescue a dog, so I asked Christina for a recommendation of a no-kill shelter. She recommended The Pet Rescue Center. We went to the site and looked at pictures. Our son saw a mixed Schnauzer/Poodle (Schnoodle) named BrookeBrooke and her new forever family and said, "That's the one!" I went to meet her, and after waiting a few days, we were told we could pick her up!

We had concerns about whether our cat Penelope and Brooke would get along. One of the nice things about a rescue is that they can often tell you things about the animal, and in this case, we were told that she gets along well with cats, dogs, and children. It turned out to be true. There were a few moments of nervousness on the part of both the animals and the humans, but we did as Christina had recommended, holding Brooke until Penelope seemed more at ease. They are doing great together!

Brooke's story is a little sad but not as bad as some. She is 8 months old and was purchased from an East Coast breeder who flew her out to California. The new owner wanted her to keep company with his terminally ill wife. He gave her 24 hours and decided it wasn't working. He relinquished her to The Pet Rescue Center. She had just gotten off the plane, was probably terribly anxious after that and meeting strangers without any known person to help her transition. Who knows what she experienced in a puppy mill, not having been purchased until she was 7 months old?

We have already fallen in love with her after only 2 days. She sleeps with our son David, and both couldn't be more pleased. We bought her a harness and took her for her first walk last night, making her sit and wait at each corner until David said she could cross the street. She caught on right away!

The people at The Pet Rescue Center were awesome! Very friendly and outgoing, while at the same time making it clear that they needed to make the right match for her. It was a very positive experience!

Penelope with Brooke's toyPS  We bought Brooke a toy, which she just sniffed at and walked away. Penelope loves it! And Brooke loves Penelope's toys. I guess the grass is greener...
