Each year, the Apalachicola Riverkeeper sponsors the Ocean Conservancy's Coastal Clean-up. This year we would like to thank uber-volunteer Ada Long for organizing an banner event. Thank you too to all the volunteers who showed up and labored to make a difference. Our coastal habitats are vital to the health of wildlife. Volunteers like this make our Apalachicola-Eastpoint-SGI-Carrabelle-Lanark communities the wonderful places they are to live, work and play.
How much trash was picked up on our shores? Eastpoint Pavillion - 50 pounds Abercrombie Landing - 25 pounds 10 Foot Hole - 750 pounds Bald Point State Park - 236 pounds Scipio Creek - 160 pounds Dog Island West - 45 pounds Millender Park - 150 pounds SGI - 775 pounds Lafayette Park - 45 pounds St. Vincent - 45 pounds Lanark Beach - 40 pounds Maritime Museum - 35 pounds St. George State Park - 65 pounds Little St. George - 95 pounds (Results aren't in from all sites but so far we are looking at 2,556 pounds of trash no longer threatening harm. From cutting boards to boat cables with steering wheels attached, food containers and cigarette butts - every piece of trash tossed into our waters and onto our shorelines has the potential of doing harm to wildlife and our beautiful Apalachicola River and Bay.
So if you see someone in our Franklin County community sporting this green Riverkeeper t-shirt, thank them for their efforts. To volunteer with the Riverkeeper, click here.
County stays the course
This week the Franklin County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) voted 4-1 to tell the St. Joe Company that there will be "No changes to the action of the governmental entity". Thus, the BOCC will not negotiate with St. Joe for alternative densities or any other provisions related to the Marina Village Center and Carrabelle East Village future land use map provisions that the BOCC repealed on December 15, 2009. The BOCC left St. Joe with two options let it lie or sue for compensation; the statute of limitations will run out in March of 2014.
The Board of City Commissioners in Port St. Joe, Fl will hold a final public meeting regarding the Northwest Florida Renewable Energy Center (Rentech's Biomass Incinerator Plant) project. Read more about this and other news on the Riverkeeper blog.
