On August 12, Alabama and Florida filed an appeal to a ruling the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals make giving Atlanta rights to withdraw water from Lake Lanier and requiring the Corps to determine how much water could be withdrawn from the Lake.  "It is critical for the Corps to understand the impacts of withdrawals on the Apalachicola River and Bay and the Gulf fisheries the system supports.  Assessment of the water flows and levels needed to sustain those systems is a critical piece of their determination" said Dan Tonsmeire, Apalachicola Riverkeeper. He also currently serves as the Chair of the ACF Stakeholders, a tri-state group working collaboratively to equitably share the waters of the ACF Basin.

Save Our Gulf

Greetings!

Save Our Gulf is an initiative of the Waterkeeper Alliance to support Waterkeepers across the Gulf directly impacted by the BP oil spill.  The initiative includes Mobile Baykeeper, Lower Mississippi Riverkeeper, Mississippi Riverkeeper, Galvaston Baykeeper, Atchafayla Basinkeeper, Emerald Coastkeeper and your Apalachicola Riverkeeper.
Initiatives critical to Save Our Gulf include recovering habitat, Restoring and enhancing water quality and ensuring freshwater inflows; sustaining native fish and wildlife populations and conserving special places on land and in the water.
Congress must act this year to make sure the BP oil disaster fines are used to restore the Gulf Coast communities, environment & economy.  It is time to make good on our national promises to the Gulf Coast.
   The Gulf supports:
  • $34 B per year in tourism
  • $22.6 B per year in seafood & commercial/recreational fishing related activity
  • 40% of all the seafood in the lower 48 states.
Please help us continue this critical work, join your Apalachicola Riverkeeper, donate generously and volunteer  as you are able.
