Sen. Bill Nelson joins RESTORE bill sponsors
Sen. Bill Nelson
Sen. Bill Nelson

"We badly need this investment in our Gulf Coast," said Sen. Bill Nelson of the RESTORE legislation.  The bill if passed will dedicate 80% of Clean Water Act penalties charged to BP  for the restoration of the Gulf Coast.  Nelson joins Sens. Landrieu, Shelby, Vitter, Sessions, Cochran, Wicker, Rubio, Baily-Hutchison and Boxer in this bipartison, regional approach.  A portion of the funds will be allocated directly and equally to the five Gulf Coast states for ecological and economic recovery.  The act will also establish a Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Council comprised of both Federal and State members.  5% of the Fund will be allocated to a Gulf Coast research, science and technology program including fisheries management.

"Whiskey is for drinking, water is for fighting over" -  prophetic words credited to Mark Twain. Yet even he could scarcely have imagined they would one  day apply to the Southeastern United States, a region better known for plentiful rainfall and abundantly flowing rivers. But for almost twenty years three states - Georgia, Florida and Alabama - have  been locked in a fierce struggle over water.

This longstanding conflict, recently ratcheted up to new level of intensity by a severe drought and a  judge's dramatic ruling, is the subject of a new documentary, Chattahoochee, From Water Wars to Water Vision , produced by Rhett Turner (Red Sky Productions) and Jonathan Wickham (ZoёTV). By interweaving individual stories, , will educate viewers on the complex issues and choices that increasingly face all of us when it comes to one of our most precious  natural resources, water.

Chattahoochee, From Water Wars to Water Vision will be featured at the 2011 Wild & Scenic Film Festival, 7 p.m Saturday Aug. 27 at St. James Bay Country Club. Carrabelle FL; 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3 at the Dixie Theater, Apalachicola FL; 7 p.m., Saturday Sept. 10 at the Gazebo Coffee Shop & Deli, Marianna FL.  For more information, click here.

  Support your Riverkeeper
Thank you to our members, donors, sponsors and supporters for answering our appeal letter.  Our work is more important than ever with the threats facing our Apalachicola River and Bay.  Please know your Riverkeeper is working diligently to protect our biodiverse riversystem, assuring adequate river flows to protect our precious freshwater flow and preventing the loss of seagrass, saltmarsh and wetland habitats.  Without those habitats our production of 90% of Florida's oysters, shrimp, crab and finfish harvest (an estimated $207M value to the local region) will be at risk.
