Apalachicola Riverkeeper makes honor roll of Waterkeeper Warriors
Greetings!

Thank you for your response to our Call To Action against HR 2018 - called the Dirty Water Act.  Your Apalachicola Riverkeeper helped lead the fight to stop this disastrous legislation. Unfortunately, the bill passed the House, 239 to 184 and will go to the Senate without a single public hearing!
"HR 2018 will negatively effect the quality of water in the Apalachicola River, the floodplain and its tributaries," said Dan Tonsmeire, Riverkeeper.  With your help we will continue our fight to keep our waters clean.  We will keep you informed as this bill moves forward through Congress.
Apalachicola Riverkeeper is one of 53 Waterkeeper Alliance Warriors who responded to the call to action.  Thank you for your help - together we can make a difference.

Save Our Gulf meets in New Orleans

Dispersants: Out of Sight - Out of Mind

Dan Tonsmeire

"Stop the use of dispersants" say the 7 Waterkeepers who met in New Orleans last week as part of the Save Our Gulf group.  The Waterkeepers represent seven entities impacted by the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Apalachicola Riverkeeper is just one of the Waterkeepers involved in preventing any further oil spill damage to the Gulf Coast.

According to Save Our Gulf, the Coast Guard and EPA have approved the use of the dispersants that sink the surface oil to the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico.  "Oil capture equipment needs the oil on the surface of the water to be effective," said Dan Tonsmeire, Apalachicola Riverkeeper. "Surface capture actually removes the oil while dispersants just sink it to the bottom - out of sight, out of mind - leaving the oil in place to do more damage."

Save Our Gulf created an action plan to improve response to the BP-Deepwater Horizon oil spill disaster.  Surface capture of the oil is more environmentally sound than the use of dispersants, according to the Waterkeepers from the Gulf Coast states.  It removes the the captured oil completely from the water.  Please support our efforts to restore the Gulf of Mexico to pre-oil spill conditions.

We are working diligently to protect our Apalachicola River and Bay.  Please help us continue our work.  Renew your membership Here.

Sincerely,

Extreme Drought Conditions
Small map of basin

"The Lower Basin of the Apalachicola River is now in extreme drought conditions due to La Nina," reports Dan Tonsmeire.  Conditions are expected to continue through next year with stream flows and rainfall expected to remain low.  Unfortunately, Atlanta is just above the drought line and is not implementing any restrictions on water use.
