Sen. Munford w DT Sen. Montford meets with Riverkeeper
Sen. Bill Munford, D, Dist. 6 met with Apalachicola Riverkeeper Dan Tonsmeire July 6 in Apalachicola.  Tonsmeire is also chairman of the Apalacicola-Chattahoochee-Flint Stakeholders Group.

Sen. Montford "willing to do whatever is necessary" to protect the Apalachicola
Apalachicola Riverkeeper Board Member Toni Riordan, joined Dan Tonsmeire, Dave McLain and Bill McCartney to discuss the recent appellate court decision as well as drought conditions with Florida State Senator Bill Montford.  Montford's District 6 includes Franklin, Calhoun and Liberty counties.

"The river is the lowest it can go under dry conditions," said Tonsmeire.  "The drought is forecast to continue and no increased flows are anticipated."

The decision last week by the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta places future water allocations from Lake Lanier into the hands of the Army Corps of Engineers.  Lake Lanier is a man-made portion of the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint river system.  Inadequate allocations from Lake Lanier will directly effect flow levels in the Apalachicola River, threatening coastal fisheries and the seafood industry.

Tonsmeire reported that Sen. Montford is willing to do whatever is necessary to protect the river.  Montford is considering convening a task force to develop a position for the State of Florida in light of the new court decision.

Shoreline Apalachicola River & Bay - it's more than a pretty picture

The Apalachicola River is more than a beautiful system to view from the bridge.  It is an essential part of our economy with an estimated value of $5 Billion annually.   That figure includes the value of our fisheries, our land, and our floodplain's valuable absorption abilities.  As incubator for wildlife in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, the loss of our marshlands would impact both recreational fishing and commercial harvesting throughout the southeastern United States.

Don't Miss:

Wild & Scenic Film Festival

Aug. 26 & 27, Carrabelle

Sept. 2 & 3, Apalachicola
