Natural Resources Damage Assessment

Your Riverkeeper Dan Tonsmeire participated in today's Natural Resources Damage Assessment (NRDA) meeting held in Walton County.  "The NRDA Trustees from the five Gulf states negotiated an initial amount of money to be paid by BP to begin the restoration of impacts from the oil spill.  Impacts will continue to occur over time but the State of Florida wants to begin some restoration projects as soon as possible," said Tonsmeire.
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection has developed a preliminary list of projects for restoration to mitigate for damages caused by BP Oil Spill Disaster.  It includes projects such as restoring beaches, marshlands and oyster habitat impacted by the spill. Local governments were to pick out their highest priority projects. Eight counties from NW Florida were invited to participate in the meeting today.  However, the NRDA Trustees will make the final decision on which projects will be funded.
