Greetings!
The weather is getting warmer outside...the grass a bit greener... flowers are in bloom... and yes, the Tubeman Tomatoes have been planted! Spring is all around us and what an enjoyable season it's been. Traditionally, spring is a time of rebirth and we've seen a rebirth of sorts here at Leavitt Tube. Where our W25 mill once stood, a reborn mill is now in its place - the W50 mill, which is featured in this month's issue of the Pipeline. And where our old #8 mill was, a new #8 mill has sprung up in its place. That mill will be featured in our next issue.
We encourage you to schedule a visit to Leavitt Tube here this spring or summer to see our new mills up close and personal. If you can't make it here, let us schedule a virtual tour of the mill for you instead. However (and whenever) you decide to see our new equipment, I know you're going to be impressed by all the upgrades and improvements - the press already is!
Like many of our vendors and customers, Leavitt Tube Company will be closed on Monday, May 28th in honor of Memorial Day. The Tube Man has surveyed some of our tube people and many are using the weekend to travel to a lakeside abode, relax, work on the yard, and spend time with family. The most common response is structured around outside activities. Many of our tube people enjoy golfing, boating, fishing, hiking, and barbecuing. Whatever you are planning, be safe and enjoy.
Thank you to everyone for your continued support of Leavitt Tube.

Leavitt Tube Commissions New Structural Mill
|
Earlier this year we finished putting the final touches on our brand new mid-range Structural Tube Mill, the W50. This state of art mill is equipped with all of the modern advancements in tube making technology which enable us to manufacture the best HSS products in the industry. The W50 is capable of producing 1.5x1.5-188 through 4x4-313, along with most of the corresponding rectangles, and HI-Y 50 Pipe Size Tubes from 1.25sch10 through 4sch40.
The W50 mill features a Flexible Forming Section and Quick-Change Cassette Package Sizing Section to cut down on change-over times, a cold circular saw for a clean end finish and a fully automated bundling and packaging line to efficiently put material into our inventory and ready to ship to you.
Construction on the new mill began in October of 2011 and lasted through the end of year. In January of 2012, tests on the mill took place until the first tube (1.66-140) came off the mill on Wednesday, January 25th. If
you recall from December's issue of the Pipeline, the last size produced
on our W25 mill was also 1.66-140.
The new mill has already replaced our smaller structural mill, the W25, and by the end of the year will also replace the W40, Leavitt's first structural mill. The W50 is extremely efficient at tube manufacturing - at almost twice the speeds of our previous mills, we are able to produce the same size range on one mill that two mills used to produce (the W25 & W40).
We are continuing to make updates to the W50. This month, we added an Eddy Current tester which further inspects the integrity of our product. In the 3rd quarter of 2012, we will install flash removal capabilities for all of your stringent applications.
Please call your favorite tube person today to schedule a tour of Leavitt's 40 + acre campus, and see the new W50 up-close and personal!

Employee Spotlight |
As the 1960's came to an end, we entered into 1970 trying to make the Earth a better place. In fact, we celebrated Earth Day for the first time in April of that year, which brought more focus than ever before on our environment. As the world rallied behind this cause, Leavitt Tube went out and made our work environment a better place. We did that by welcoming Jan Knapp through the front door, our employee spotlight for May.
Jan started with Leavitt Tube on a part-time basis on January 8th, 1970. Still in high school, Jan would spend her days pounding the books and her afternoons pounding the typewriter as she entered in sales orders. When it came time to graduate, Jan knew that she wanted to continue working at Leavitt and was offered a full-time position as an Order Entry Specialist where she would work for the next several years.
Jan, who is always up for a challenge, has taken on many jobs and responsibilities over her more than 40 year career here Leavitt Tube. After order entry, Jan became a sales secretary where she assisted the inside and outside sales representatives. Then in 1989, Jan was promoted to Inside Sales, becoming Leavitt Tube's 1st female inside sales representative. In 1994, she took on a supervisor position, managing our Sales Administration staff for the next 15 years.
Today, Jan is a Sales Assistant where she helps the sales team with order entry, material test reports, steel receipts and billing support. If you have a missing invoice or need an extra copy of an MTR from yesterday's shipment, Jan's the Tube Person to call!
In her free time, Jan lives and breathes golf. She first got into the sport in the '90s when fellow Tube Person Sue Michaelson invited her to a golf clinic. After her first clinic, she was hooked and remains interested in the sport today. Her golf highlights include going on a golf vacation in Hawaii and watching a practice round live in Augusta, Georgia, home of the Masters.
Jan, a cat lover, resides in Crestwood, IL, a close suburb to Leavitt Tube. Jan enjoys going to neighborhood festivals with friends and family such as the Oak Fest, as well as attending concerts for local acts and big name artists. Some of her favorite concerts have been The Beatles, John Mellencamp and Elton John. She also enjoys attending theatre in the winter time when it's too cold outside to golf.
If you want to say 'hi' to Jan and talk about all the latest in the world of golf, give her a call at 773-881-2645, or send her an email, jknapp@leavitt-tube.com. |

Leavitt Tube Achieves Producer Certification Status |

We are pleased to announce that Leavitt Tube, a subsidiary of Maruichi Steel Tube, has passed the audit process and earned the right to use the Steel Tube Institute of North America's Producer Certification Mark. Leavitt Tube is among the first producers to achieve STINA's Producer Certification status.
The audits and product testing required to achieve certification were conducted by Intertek, one of the world's largest providers of auditing, inspections, testing, quality assurance and certification of companies' products and processes. It's an added assurance that the HSS you're receiving from Leavitt adheres to ASTM and other nationally recognized manufacturing standards. More proof that the investments we've made will help us be your solutions leader for years to come.
