Pat Knutson

And now...The Pipeline introduces the tallest member of our office staff. Standing at 6'3 and hailing from Munster, IN, here he is...Paaaaat Knutson, our Employee Spotlight for November!

Pat grew up in Munster, IN with his parents and six brothers and sisters. A lifelong fan of the Indiana Hoosiers, he graduated in May of 1988 from the Indiana University School of Business with a B.S. in Finance. Shortly after graduation, Pat was bit with the steel tubing bug. His first interview after college was with Leavitt Tube. After getting a tour of the facility and falling in love with manufacturing, he was hooked! In January of 1989, Pat began his career at Leavitt as an Inside Sales Representative and held the position until he left in 1992 to pursue other interests. After his two-year hiatus, Pat came back to Leavitt Tube as an Outside Sales Representative handling Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky and Illinois.

After 11 years on the road of building lasting relationships with customers and helping them with their tubing needs, Pat was eager to get back into the office so he could help a broader spectrum of customers. In 2005, that dream became a reality as he took over the Western-Half of the United States as a Regional Sales Manager, the position he currently holds today. Pat & Mike Conces, our Regional Sales Manager for the Eastern-Half of the United States, are responsible for Leavitt Tube's current and future growth.

Here's a fun fact that you might not have known about Pat - he has an identical twin brother (just like Mike has a twin sister)! In fact, Pat's high school and college job was the "Knute Boy's Landscaping" where Pat and Mike (his twin) maintained dozens of lawns in the neighborhood. He currently resides in Clarendon Hills, IL a western suburb of Chicago, along with his wife Karin and their two daughters. In addition to spending time with his family, Pat enjoys golfing, playing softball, and coaching his daughter's basketball teams.

In October of 2009, Pat successfully completed MSCI's "Strategic Metals Management Program" at Washington University's Olin Business School in St. Louis, MO. Please join us in congratulating him on this great accomplishment!

ArticleLeft1Steel Tube Institute Announces HSS Product Certification Program

At the Steel Tube Institute of North America's annual meeting on November 4th, 2010, a new Certification Program was announced. Below is a snippet of the Press Release Courtesy of PR Newswire (http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/steel-tube-institute-announces-hss-product-certification-program-106705548.html).

CHICAGO, Nov. 4, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- The Steel Tube Institute of North America (STINA) announced today that it is establishing an industry-wide, structural steel tubing (HSS) Product Certification Program. The Program is designed to provide assurance that the HSS certified by STINA's program has been produced to, and tested to meet, ASTM standards.

"Right now it's virtually impossible to track the chain of supply of structural steel tubing (HSS)," said Bill Wolfe, STINA's executive director. "It may be produced anywhere in the world, then travel through a series of distribution channels before it reaches the job site. In addition, the documentation and standards have historically been self-certified."

Mr. Wolfe went on to explain the problems this can create. "Recently substandard product was found at job sites, which created a significant concern among specifiers and end users throughout the U.S. and Canada. The liability of a product like HSS can include the design and engineering firms involved in the project, as well as the fabricators, contractors and project owners. Representatives of each of these groups have expressed concern about substandard products, or products which may not meet the proper quality standards," he explained.

That's why the Steel Tube Institute of North America, and its HSS producers, became determined to create a system to authenticate and certify the testing procedures and documentation that accompany the product. The STI's HSS members wanted to assure their customers that the HSS they were specifying and buying was indeed made to the ASTM standards they expected.

STINA's HSS Committee members participating in the certification program include the leading U.S. and Canadian producers of HSS: Allied Tube & Conduit, Bull Moose Tube, Evraz, JMC Steel Group, Leavitt, Hannibal Industries, Southland Tube, Valmont, Vest and Maruichi.

While an exact timetable for certification is not yet available, testing by Intertek of STINA's member companies is expected to begin in December.

ArticleRight3Tube Man Turkey

Here is my fantastic turkey recipe that will be enjoyed by my family.

  • Season and rub turkey pieces with thyme, butter, and garlic. Broil on high for 30 minutes to sear the meat.
  • Cover turkey with foil and switch oven to bake at 375° until meat thermometer registers 180°  in the thigh. This will generally take about 3 hours.
  • Remove from oven and let stand for 15 minutes. Enjoy!
