Hi (Contact First Name),

With Labor Day recently passing, we have unfortunately arrived at the end of summer. Goodbye vacations, barbeque, baseball, and heat...'til next year!

In the U.S., Labor Day has been celebrated on the first Monday of September every year since President Grover Cleveland declared that day "Labor Day" in 1894.

It's changed over the years, but according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (2009), here's a breakdown of some typical American occupations:

Firefighters: 258,000
Hairdressers, hairstylists and cosmetologists: 718,000
Chefs and head cooks: 281,000
Musicians, singers and related workers 179,000
Bakers 183,000
Taxi drivers and chauffeurs 286,000
Service station attendants 96,000
Farmers and ranchers 825,000
Pharmacists 232,000
Teachers 6.5 million

We're scheduled for a busy autumn.  Leavitt's massive upgrade to our largest Chicago mill, the W80, is scheduled to begin after Thanksgiving.  As always, please contact any of our Tube People with questions.

Employee Spotlight

For over 50 years, Leavitt Tube has been known to produce quality tubing that's second to none in the industry. We couldn't produce a superior product without all of our tube people who work out in the plant and in the office. One gentleman in particular really exemplifies the quality attitude at Leavitt - that is September's Employee Spotlight, Bob Lenhardt.

Bob started his career in 1977 at the Ford Motor Company as a tool and die apprentice. After spending four years in that role, he got a call from a Leavitt Tube Sales Rep who told him about a job opening in the Quality Control Department. Bob decided to check it out and in 1981 started as a QC Tester. As a QC Tester, he was responsible for testing all of our structural material using our tensile test procedures.

Today, Bob is our Quality Control Inspector. Not only does he still do tensile tests, he also checks all of our in-house tubing to make sure it is conforming to the A500 and A513 tolerances. If Bob sees a problem with the product, he will close the mill down and won't authorize it to start-up again until the quality is up to Leavitt's stringent standards.

Bob grew up on the south side of Chicago in the Roseland neighborhood and currently resides in Crete, IL with his wife Yvonne. He's an avid Chicago Blackhawks fan (2010 was a fantastic year for Bob since "Da Hawks" won the Stanley Cup), as well as a Bears and White Sox fan. Bob also enjoys hiking, listening to classic rock and spending time with his three kids and two grand kids.

Bob celebrates this 30th year at Leavitt Tube on January 26th. Mark your calendars, and make sure to wish him a happy anniversary!

Leavitt's New Hem Saw Has Arrived!

Hem Saw

Our high speed, double column, Hem Saw has been successfully installed in Chicago. This saw is located at the end of our W80 mill.

Our objective for this system is to transfer butt welds and open seam material (while on the mill) to a location to properly remove the defect and produce usable material in standard mill lengths with a tolerance of +1" / -0".

This investment coincides with our commitment to ISO 14001, our environmental policy that shows Leavitt is a responsible corporate citizen in protecting the environment and committed to further enhance our environmental performance.
