Featured Product: OSLON SSL 150

OSLON SSL

Light and color have a profound effect on our well-being and on the atmosphere of a room. Correct color rendering is an important aspect of good lighting. A high color rendering index (CRI) means that objects appear in their "true" colors to the human eye. With its high-CRI OSLON 150, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors is closing in on perfection. As in natural daylight (CRI 100) objects illuminated with OSLON SSL LEDs appear in their natural colors thanks to the excellent color rendering index of the Hi-CRI version, typical value of 95. Realistic color rendering is important particularly in retail, so that the goods purchased inside the store look as good as they do outside in daylight. Items in exhibitions and pictures in museums should be presented in light that allows their true colors to shine. Natural color rendering is also important in other general illumination applications, such as in the home, where objects and furnishings can appear brighter and livelier than they would under traditional incandescent light.

The OSLON SSL 150 provides a wide radiation pattern (150) and allows excellent interaction with reflectors of various designs. This makes solutions possible that are more efficient than competing products. The OSLON SSL 150 optical distribution makes it easier to mix the color of LED clusters and the flat form of the lens avoids internal shading effects common in tight clusters of LEDs.

The OSLON SSL 150 is perfect for several applications in home, office and retail shops. Lamp retrofits (e.g. fluorescent replacement), spotlights, task lights, shelf lighting and downlight fixtures are all great applications for this revolutionary LED. Architects and designers are using the OSLON SSL 150 in architecture and hospitality applications, and in color changing fixtures for stage and studio lighting.

Highlight: LM-80 Reports Released

LM-80 Reports ReleasedFor LED lamp, light engine and luminaire manufacturers to receive an Energy Star certificate for their products, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires that the LEDs used in these products comply with the LM-80 (Lumen Maintenance) test requirements. LM-80 test reports provide evidence that the LED component can be assessed and compared across all LED manufacturers. OSRAM Opto Semiconductors is one of the first to have successfully met the criteria of the LM-80 test requirements with two very different product families - OSLON SSL and Golden DRAGON Plus.

Two different high-power LEDs from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors were tested - the ceramic OSLON SSL LED and the Golden DRAGON Plus premold LED. Inaugurated by the Illuminating Engineering Society (IESNA), the LM-80 test offers luminaire manufacturers a means of comparing the performance of LEDs from different suppliers based on reliable and comparable data. Successful completion of the LM-80 test is an essential step toward receiving an Energy Star certificate from the EPA.

The aim of the LM-80 test is to demonstrate, in an abbreviated test of 6,000 hours (approximately nine months), a consistent industry method of measuring lumen maintenance of SSL sources, such as LED packages, arrays and modules. The LM-80 specifies that LEDs are tested at three different temperatures to assure performance in various conditions. In addition to the two predefined temperatures of 55C and 85C, OSRAM has used a third temperature of 105C to simulate the requirements of highly demanding applications.

Featured Event: Strategies in Light

Strategies in Light is a business conference and exhibition on high-brightness LEDs and lighting produced by Strategies Unlimited and PennWell Corporation. Over the past 12 years, it has grown to be both the longest-running and the largest conference in the HB LED and lighting industry.

Strategies in Light with OSRAM Opto Semiconductors

February 22-24 at the Santa Clara Convention Center in California, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors will be showcasing their LEDs and bringing some bright minds to deliver keynote addresses.

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors' President and CEO, Aldo Kamper, will take the stage at 9:00 AM on Wednesday, February 23, to deliver his keynote address: "A Fresh Look at the LED World". The adoption of solid-state lighting is to be driven by key topics like energy saving, global care and the lighting environment. What revolutionary impacts can the LED still offer? Automotive is one of the big success stories for the tiny light sources: after only being used in indicator applications, LEDs have migrated to headlamp functions as state of the art light sources as well as being used in active safety applications. Is this market saturated? Consumer applications have been using LED technology for several years. What specific requirements does this market - the biggest today - demand from the LED manufactures all over the world? Semiconductor technologies are the base for broad expectations and considered as the revolution of lighting. What needs to be done to make this a reality?

Jianzhong Jiao

Dr. Jianzhong Jiao will open Workshop #1 - Standards for Solid-State Lighting, at 8:00 AM on Tuesday, February 22. Dr. Jiao, Director, Regulations and Emerging Technologies, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors is an internationally recognized expert for technology development, testing, standards and regulations. He holds multiple leadership positions in the lighting industry. He is the Chairman of SAE Lighting Committee, past Chairman of the NGLIA, past Chairman of the NEMA SSL Section Technical Committee, and an active member of IESNA, ANSI, UL, SPIE, and IEEE. Dr. Jiao is an SAE Fellow, and has received several industry awards. He has 9 US Patents, over 20 technical papers, numerous public talks and magazine articles, and he teaches seminars and short courses for LED lighting.

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors will also host an exhibit demonstrating the latest LED technology for general lighting, automotive, projection and horticultural lighting. Stop by and see our exhibit at booth #504.
