New Asian embroideries |
Beautiful New Arrivals...
It was a rainy March in Paris
this year but the designs (as well as the food and wine) more than made up for
it. My goal, as always, was to
find collections to complement the huge archives already in our New York and
London offices. Tribal and Ethnic pieces were the success story from the City
of Lights - especially fine Indian and Pakistani embroideries. They have now found a temporary home at
the Design Library, but are nomads still as they move around the world toward
new incarnations in the collections of our clients.
After Paris came the
unexpected bonus: a favorite source in the South of France had just bought the contents of three
castles. My timing was perfect. From high fashion embroideries and beads
to large Central Asian wall hangings;
it is so interesting to note the consistency of a family's taste even across
generations. Merely being an
aristocrat does not confer good taste, but when they have it, the pieces are
REALLY GOOD! -Peter Koepke

 We're Celebrating!Our Expansion/ Renovation is Complete.The negotiation for the
space
took months. Development of the
floor plan evolved over many late nights and weekends. The
relocation
of millions of designs was daunting, and painting,
lighting and endless organization were a challenge
but, as of March, 2010, the Design Library has moved into its new home! It's the same
place that you already
know but now in one huge room - an 11,000 sq. foot homage to the endless
invention of
surface design. Early visitors are
already bowled over. It's an even
better place to work. Our 1000+
categories are easy to find and see. Collections that were formerly stored in the mine (hidden away - purgatory for
design)
are now in the light, accessible, and ready to impress.
We
are all proud and happy and looking forward to many more years of
growth in our Hudson River home. -Peter Koepke Opening PartyOn March 9th we held an Open House and party to celebrate the opening of
the new space. Many of our friends and clients attended, and we were
delighted to give them tours of the new space and our vast collections,
now all beautifully laid out and accessible. Peter gave an eloquent
speech in which he honored the unsung heroes of design - the thousands
of men and women who, through the ages, have given of the fruits of
their labor and creativity so we might enjoy their inspiration today.
Live music entertained us - delicious food and wine flowed - a great
time was had by all! -Ali Duffey Design Library staff prepare for the party |

| From Richard Weissman, President The Design Library Never Sleeps! As most of the general business world chose to cut back and retrench in 2009, the Design Library forged ahead with ambitious plans for the archive's physical expansion and renovation. None of this would have been possible without the continued support from our loyal inspirees and the many new clients who have recently learned of the almost limitless inspirational resources located in New York City's backyard and in London's Soho neighborhood.
Our growth is showing itself in many forms; we have added personnel, and we are constantly searching the world for exciting new collections. These additions to the general archive are the life blood of our business.
Back in March, we launched our new LinkedIn group "FRIENDS OF THE DESIGN LIBRARY" For those of you who are members of LinkedIn, please join us here. The group will offer timely information regarding the arrival of new collections - members will be the first to know about the exciting new designs that regularly land in Wappingers Falls. We will announce our sales travel plans should anyone want to meet during one of our visits to your area. Members can get to know other Design Library fans and pass on the good word about the inspirational experiences they have had visiting us or viewing one of our collections. We also have a Facebook page for all you FBers. (Click the button to the left.)
Our inspirational reach is vast and getting broader by the minute. Keep a look out! There's always something exciting and new happening at the Design Library! -Richard Weissman

Susan's Visit In May we were honored to have a visit from the Design Library's founder, Susan Meller, and her husband Frank Rubenfeld. As well as beginning the collection that became the Design Library 35 years ago, Susan is known as the author of two best-selling books; Textile Designs: Two Hundred Years of European and American Patterns, which remains the industry standard for design categorization, and last year's Russian Textiles (both books can be purchased here).
Susan commented "When I stepped into the newly designed and vastly expanded space of the Design Library, I saw that Peter and his team have realized what I had envisioned twenty-five years ago. This is truly the world's finest archive of its kind - a designer's paradise! Thank you all."

Peg Bauer, Head Archivist Countless designs pass through my hands week after week in their customary return to their home shelves. Because I see so many designs each day, in my mind, most of them remain a blur of the library at large.
When a design catches my eye, more often than not it is from the Ducharne collection. These French paper impressions (1920s-1960s) are special to me in that they are very user-friendly. There are no tricks or strategy to imagining how one of these beautiful designs might fit into one's life. I am fortunate that my duties here do not always require me to think of designs specifically as apparel- or home furnishings-oriented. A simple geometric might make a nice summer skirt or table runner, or perhaps a floral border would make a nice pillow for the bedroom or a tunic. Ducharnes are simple enough to be relevant for many uses, but at the same time sophisticated enough to feel extraordinary. -Peg Bauer
One of the premiere Lyon silk studios, the Ducharne Studio created original designs for many of the French haute couture houses (Dior, Balmain, Balenciaga, Schiaparelli, Givenchy, Chanel...), and collaborated with leading Paris-based artists and illustrators (Jean Patou, Per Spook, Michel Dubost...) The complete collection represents five decades' work from Ducharne; these paper impressions and artists' proofs wonderfully illustrate "les folies années de la soie" or "the crazy years of silk", when Modernist ideas were translated into textiles.
The Ducharne Collection can be viewed
by making an appointment either to visit the Design Library, or to see
one of our Design Consultants when they're in your area.
