 Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays

Happy Holidays, everyone!  As we enter the season of goodwill, it is an appropriate time to think back on the past year, and to look forward to what the future brings in 2012.

We've weathered the worst of the economic recession that still plagues most of the Lower 48, but we still have challenges next year. Despite this fact, the true spirit of Anchorage - the spirit that shows that Anchorage citizens care about each other, their neighbors and their communities - is alive and well.  I saw this firsthand this week when I helped distribute food to families in need at the Neighborhood GIFT program; it was beyond heartening to see neighbors helping their fellow citizens in their time of greatest need.
This is the spirit, as we approach Christmas, upon which we can build.  This means working together for the common good, doing what we can to build our community, and giving something of ourselves to do so.

On a personal note, it has been a privilege to serve as your mayor for the past two-and-a-half years.  My wife, Lynnette, and I have had the pleasure of meeting so many interesting people, and we've come to enjoy and appreciate the warm-hearted citizens of Anchorage even more.  During these dark months of winter, I encourage everyone to get out and enjoy all the wonderful activities that make Anchorage a first-class winter city.

I wish you all a joyful and peaceful Christmas, and the very best for the New Year.  Please join me in keeping our brave men and women in uniform in your thoughts this holiday season.
