Anchorage Update

Greetings!

Mayor Dan Sullivan

With the snow essentially gone and temperatures finally reaching springtime levels, it's time to get outside and enjoy the beautiful city of Anchorage. As usual, there's a lot of activity in our city this month. Road improvement projects are getting underway, we've launched a new program designed to help the homeless get the help they need, and numerous MOA departments are tweeting and facebooking in an effort to keep citizens up-to-date and informed about city business. As always, please feel free to contact the mayor's office at mayor@muni.org with comments or suggestions, or follow me on facebook or twitter

Construction season is back: please travel safely during Alaska's "fourth season."

The old joke is that Alaska has four seasons: fall, winter, spring, and construction season. Road projects are a good sign that we're taking care of our current roadways while expanding the existing network, so the orange cones and construction crews can be a welcome sight. That said, it can also be an inconvenience for drivers who frequently travel a certain route. The city is aware of this fact and diligent in getting the word out to the public. Be sure to check www.roads4u.org frequently for updates on where and when traffic may be delayed or rerouted. In addition, the @ANCroads twitter account frequently sends updates to its followers. And remember, the short-term frustration is certainly worth the long-term investment in improved, well-maintained roads and safety.

I/M test on its way out, but repeal process takes time

In May 2010, the Anchorage Assembly approved my ordinance to repeal the Vehicle Inspection & Maintenance program (IM). In order to terminate the program, federal regulations required the Municipality to revise its portion of the current State Implementation Plan (SIP) for air quality.

Property Taxes: up or down this year?

City tax bills should begin arriving in local mailboxes any day now. While no one looks forward to writing a check to the government, I hope citizens will take some comfort in my administration's effort to limit tax increases. Property taxes to be collected for both the Anchorage School District and Municipality will rise 1.2 percent even though we came in $12 million below the Tax Cap.
