The Basics
Global competition is leading to a wide variety of teams to accomplish work tasks
NPD teams follow four foundational designs:
- Functional work groups,
- Lightweight teams,
- Heavyweight teams, and
- Venture teams.
As projects increase in complexity and risk, the team structure needs to become more cross-functional and autonomous.
Self-directed teams provide high levels of job satisfaction to individuals yet are more difficult to manage when team members are dispersed globally. Virtual teams can employ specific meeting protocols to gain higher success rates in NPD.

Peer Power by Clay and Olitt
Peer Power is a great book to help us all work better on teams. The authors give many examples of failed relationships and provide tools to cope with difficult work team members.
Especially valuable are the draft conversations at the end of each chapter. These give you a chance to role play and model a conversation before you face the difficult peer or boss in a real-life team situation.

An Olympic Team
The Olympic Torch is ignited for each Olympic Games in Greece, where in ancient times, a flame was kept burning throughout the games.
Our modern torch relay was established in 1928 by Carl Diem during the Berlin Olympic Games.
