February 2010

What an amazing start to 2010 for our Carriage House Kids! January sped by with a wonderful selection of activities that incorporated the bright winter weather (snowmen decorating), the early sunsets (all about stars and bedtime rituals), and of course plenty of warm thoughtful indoor activities.  February promises to be just as busy. Get ready - we've even got a Super Bowl party planned.

It's a Puzzle!

Carriage House celebrated National Puzzle Day on January 29 with puzzles of all sizes, shapes and forms. The problem solving skills, imagination, and sense of accomplishment that are intrinsic to puzzles make them perfect for children of all ages. From the simple peek-a-boo puzzles for toddlers, to the coloring and cutting of original puzzles by the prekindergarten children, to the challenging 300 piece puzzle for the after school group, Carriage House's puzzle day celebration was a great hit.

The Super Bowl - A Teaching Opportunity

Of course we'll all be cheering for our favorite Super Bowl teams at Carriage House, and the children are excited about having their very own Carriage House Super Bowl party.

But this is also a great opportunity to teach children about sportsmanship and respectful competition.  We'll have discussion circles about what it means to be part of a team and how to set and reach goals.

As an aside, the Carriage House children have completed their survey on favorite Super Bowl snacks. Topping the list- pizza, chips, cheese doodles, and cookies.

February - a Month of Love
... and Don't Forget Fido

Valentine's Day provides a wonderful chance for children to learn more about love. Kids know there's a big difference between loving your family and loving pizza. We'll  explore their ideas on that and incorporate fun activities to drive the point home. During writing center time, children will practice skills by addressing their classroom Valentine's Day cards.

On February 19 we'll be celebrating National Love Your Pet Day. While we can't host real dogs and cats (or various other pets), the Carriage House children will be bringing in their favorite toy pet. The kids are eager to share stories about their pets' personalities.  We'll also talk about some of the great things pets do for us.
