U.S. Department of Education Releases Blueprint to Transform Career Technical Education

In April, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan released the Obama Administration's blueprint for transforming Career and Technical Education by reauthorizing the Carl D. Perkins Act of 2006. The thrust is to reduce skill shortages, and spur business growth. The department will invest 1 billion dollars in the 2013 school year, but we will not see changes for a full year. The plan is to add 3,000 Career Academies nationwide and increase CTE enrollment by 500,000 students. The proposal for a reauthorized Perkins Act would transform CTE in a new era of rigorous, relevant, and results-driven CTE shaped by four core principals: alignment, collaboration, accountability, and innovation.

Evergreen Elementary School District understands what it takes to provide 21st Century Learning to its  students.  It recently partnered with New Tech Network and it will have the first Bulldog Tech School in Silicon Valley.  Bulldog Tech will be a new facility built as an extension to LeyVa Middle School. It will be a school within a school. All classes have a 1:1 student -to-computer ratio with iPads and laptops. All learning will be made up of Project Based Learning where teachers are facilitators and coaches and students take charge of their own learning.

Six- week career exploration integration plan available from Santa Clara County CTE department

Many schools are infusing real world applications, and career curriculum to make programs meaningful and relevant. A six - week career exploration plan with several free web-based resources has been created to help core teachers to infuse career exploration activities in their classes.  Try this five-day plan and watch student engagement improve. The Real Game California curriculum can be used for grades 3-12.  Several grade-level versions are available.
