February is National CTE Month
During CTE Month, CTE programs and CTSOs across the country host a variety of events showcasing their programs and students' successes. This year's theme is Careers Through Education, emphasizing that CTE creates career pathways and teaches vital employability skills needed in a 21st-century workforce.
As the American economy recovers, the role of CTE is critically important. In a recent report, "Help Wanted: Projections of Jobs and Education Requirements through 2018" published by the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce, data shows that the United States will need at least 4.7 million new workers with postsecondary certificates.
Secondary and postsecondary CTE programs both provide a large portion of needed credentials, and ensure the American workforce is prepared to fill the evolving needs of business and industry.

Peterson middle school FHA-HERO chapter
Most people do not know that middle schools have career tech student organizations. Peterson middle school instructor Kelly Villarreal offers students an opportunity to compete in culinary and fashion events by advising FHA-HERO a home economics careers and technology chapter. Many CTE programs have co-curricular leadership student organizations integrated into CTE programs. These organizations often lead students to college, internships and satisfying careers. Nationally recognized career technical student organizations include:
- DECA: An Association of Marketing Students
- FHA-HERO: Home economics careers and technology
- FBLA: Future Business Leaders of America
- FFA: Future Farmers of America
- HOSA: Health Occupations Students of American
- SkillsUSA: an organization for students in the trade, industrial, and technical fields

Monta Vista student turns DECA project into US patent
It is not often that you find a high school student that has already received a US patent for their own product. Belinda Zeng, a Monta Vista high school junior and chapter president of DECA Silicon Valley, has done just that.
As a freshman, she competed in the DECA Entrepreneurship written project and took first place for her idea. At the time, she was looking for a feasible idea that could potentially revolutionize the fashion industry.
So, she took her project to the next level. Her patent is for a Fashion Design Method, System and Apparatus which is software that allows users to input information, pictures and data that creates a "mini-you" model. This allows users to "try on" clothes in a virtual dressing room. There is also a virtual design studio that allows users to design custom clothes. Zeng applied for the patent in March 2010, hired a Southern California patent lawyer, and was approved in November 2011.
