Career Tech Summer Academy keeps students connected

 Evergreen

Student participants in Evergreen School District's Career Tech Summer Academy learned reading, writing and math skills through a project-based learning model that infused career exploration and 21st century technology. The successful academy was born from a desire to keep students connected to school and learning while on summer vacation. Instead of learning from textbooks, the students in grades four through eight connected learning to the real world, further developing critical thinking, problem solving and collaboration skills. Held at Chaboya Middle School, the program was created by Denise Williams, Director of Categorical Services.

Monta Vista DECA students provide 'Business Boot Camp' to incoming high school students

 DECA Students

From August 8-12, 70 incoming Monta Vista High School students received crash courses in public relations, networking, event planning, leadership strategies, and how to dress for success. This training was a win-win situation for all students. Run by students enrolled in Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA), the camp gave current students an opportunity to use leadership skills and to prepare for upcoming competitive events. At the same time, the new students received valuable training from junior and senior students. Students created business plans and presented to venture, capitalists which also allowed students to learn about the school's business program. Full Story

Middle school career exploration camp at CCOC for Santa Clara Unified students

 Middle School CCOC Explore Camp

In early June, 67 Santa Clara Unified middle school students spent a week exploring career pathways at Central County Occupational Center. Students completed hands-on projects in computer technology, green construction, video production, and welding classrooms. It can take students four years to try on different elective classes in high school, so the benefits to this summer camp are enormous. Students also took fieldtrips to Santa Clara Adult Education, Ohlone College and Qualcomm. Career Exploration Camp 2011 video.
