Second annual CTE Conference
More than 200 teachers, administrators and business partners attended the second annual CTE Conference at the Santa Clara County Office of Education in October. The conference featured keynote speakers: Jim Brazell a technology forecaster; James Stone III, director of the National CTE Research Center; and Bill Symmonds, director of the Pathways to Prosperity Project at Harvard Graduate School of Business. The Conference was sponsored by Xilinx, Cisco, Santa Clara County Federal Credit Union, Silicon Valley Education Foundation and Firefighters ABC's. View presentations. |
National CTE Month
February is national CTE Month. There are several activities that teachers, students and administrators can do to celebrate the benefits of CTE. Having students at your school develop a Public Service Announcement (PSA) can be fun. View the winning 2010 National CTE PSA video. Also, your school can proclaim a CTE Day. Read what other schools have done for CTE month. Also, districts can order Santa Clara County CTE products. | |

East Side Union High School student visits President Obama |

Silver Creek High School student Crystal Vo recently visited the Oval Office and President Obama. Crystal Vo was the second runner-up in the National Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge for her baked goods company called Sweet Tooth Bites, which specializes in cake balls. More than 24,000 students competed in the challenge sponsored by the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship. Full Story.

San Jose High School CTE ribbon-cutting ceremony
 After five long years of preparation, the new Career Technical Education Building opened at San Jose High School in September. Architects, administrators, board members, teachers and students gathered for the ceremony. The building houses many Engineering Project Lead the Way classes. The event emphasized the value of Career Technical Education in Santa Clara County schools. |

Elementary students exposed to science careers maintain interest
National studies show that students who are aware of the wide variety of science careers available, and the vibrant women and men involved in science today are more likely to stay interested in science and consider a science career. Sally Ride created a series of books for upper elementary classrooms titled Cool Careers in Science. |

Campbell Middle School holds Career Day Campbell Middle School is clear: Teachers and administrators want their students to connect learning to earning. The school recently held a Career Day for eighth graders. It offers a year-long program that introduces students to careers. Prior to graduation, the students write a research paper on a college or career, and present it to a panel of community members. The boys and girls attended appointments with guest speakers. Five speakers spoke about how they use academics in their work lives. Wilfredo Hernandez explained how his love for solving complicated math problems led him to a career as a network engineer. SCCOE hosts CTE professional learning communities for high schools The SCCOE has hosted two CTE professional learning communities. There are 19 participants in the Arts, Media and Entertainment cohort representing nine districts, and there are seven instructors in the Building Trades representing four districts. Both cohorts meet monthly. Meetings can be observed by teachers and administrators. Their topics range from repositioning CTE in your district to presentations from California Department of Education, ConnectEd, California Partnership Academies, Career Academies by UC Berkeley and CTE Performance Assessments. |

John Hogan has found success in his  new nonprofit organization located in Los Gatos: TeenForce is a temporary employment agency exclusively for teenagers. CTE Champion - Business & Education Partners Award
June Kadoyama and John Hogan were recently awarded CTE Champion awards. June is a career specialist at Morgan Hill Unified School District. She leaves no stone unturned when it comes to assisting with CTE. She is constantly coordinating and informing teachers and administrators on all CTE issues. John is the CEO and founder of TeenForce. He exemplifies the role of a business partner with the CTE department. John can be counted on to step up to the plate to provide assistance to move CTE forward throughout Santa Clara County. | |
