Santa Clara Unified School District Career Exploration Summer Camp

campIf you have not heard about Santa Clara Unified School District's Career Exploration summer camp, you have not heard about one of the best programs in Santa Clara County!  CTE director Tabitha Kappler-Hurley teams up with Central County Occupational Center, Ohlone College and Santa Clara Adult Education to host this magnificent camp for kids. In one week, 80 middle school students explore Video Production, Graphic Design, Green Construction and Forensic Science. All students receive daily instruction and leave with projects they proudly display to friends and families. Students also participate in a fieldtrip to Santa Clara Adult School, Ohlone Community College and the Don Von Raesfield power plant. That is more exposure to careers than some students receive in four years of high school. For information on how to start a summer camp, contact tkhurley@scusd.net.

They requested to use the video in a weekly newsletter! Special thanks to Bakari Holmes, Science and Engineering Instructor at Gunn High School, for assisting in the video's production.

He will share how to move from the "why to how to integrate CTE and academics." James R. Stone, III, Director for the National Research Center for Career and Technical Education, will share powerful evidence on Math in CTE, Programs of Study, and how CTE reduces the dropout rate.
The conference offers more than 15 workshops ranging from instructional strategies to video production in all subjects.

Prepare middle school students to explore 21st century careers
What does your school do to prepare students for careers? It is not too early to schedule an event to help prevent middle school students from dropping out of school. Use this promotional flier and agenda to help create your event so that middle school students look forward to career classes in high school. The middle school career exploration event is designed for students and parents to attend.

Are students more engaged when academics are linked to careers?
student articleIt is true: California Partnership Academies keep students in school.  When courses link learning to careers, students look forward to going to school. Read about Cynthia Gutierrez who was receiving C's and D's, and how she might have lost interest in school. As a freshman, she joined the Education Academy, a small school within a school. She plans to go to Laney College, then a 4-year school to obtain her teaching credential.
UC a-g CTE classes surge
The University of California has been assisting career and technical education leaders gain credit for CTE courses. Over the past 10 years, the number of a-g UC approved courses has skyrockteted from less than 1,000 in 2001 to more than 9,000 in 2010.
The University of California will be holding their next UCCI Institute in November at Asilomar in Pacific Grove.
