Good News Is Out There
(You Just Have to Know Where to Look!)
Greetings!
With all the negative news stories out there about the economy, one would think it would be difficult to find anything positive to talk about. But Piqua does have a lot of good news to share in 2011. In fact, this year has proven to be one of the best for total construction activity in nearly a decade.
Much of the commercial construction has come from our existing companies investing in new and expanded faciltities. This is true for both commercial and industrial companies.
In last quarter's newsletter, we highlighted projects from the Upper Valley Career Center and Apex Aluminum. This month we are focusing on the construction of the new Piqua Municipal Power System Service Center and the addition of Roses Store to the City's Market Place Shopping Center. Several other smaller projects are also either complete or soon will be, including Arby's and Taco Bell on the City's east side.
All told, total construction activity is expected to surpass $26 million in 2011.
Good news indeed!
Best regards,
Bill Murphy Executive Director |

Piqua Municipal Power System Begins Work on New Service Center
Work continues on a new 41,422 square foot Piqua Power System Service Center at 201 Hemm Avenue.

The new consolidated service center will house 26 Power System employees, equipment and inventory currently housed at two separate locations in the City of Piqua: 123 Bridge Street and 919 South Main Street. The Bridge Street location is home to Power System offices and storage and is located in the Dome, a Federally-owned nuclear power plant, which operated from 1963 thru 1966 and was occupied by Power System employees in 1969. The South Main Street location is the site of the retired coal-fired power plant, which generated power from 1933 to 1996, and is planned to be demolished.

The Fort Piqua Plaza Enjoys Continued Success
Located on High Street between Main and Wayne Streets, the Fort Piqua Plaza is the crown jewel of Downtown Piqua. The Plaza is home to the Piqua Public Library, Winans Fine Chocolates & Coffees and the Fort Piqua Plaza Banquet & Conference Center.
"The Plaza has been a tremendous marketing story for the community's economic development efforts," said Bill Murphy, Executive Director for Grow Piqua Now. "When I am talking with prospective clients or site selection consultants, I share how our community of 20,000 residents was able to complete a $22 million restoration project, using tax credits, grants and private donations. And, if a community can undertake something as large and complex as this, it can certainly help make just about any economic development project happen."
The Grand Ballroom located on the fourth floor of the facility has become a favorite for weddings, receptions, conferences and other business events. The fourth floor also boasts a number of small and mid-sized conference rooms ideal for meetings and events of all sizes. Each of the rooms have been beautifully restored and equipped with state-of-the-art audio/visual equipment.
