Danza Urbana Festival Bologna, Italy September 7th-11th
Last week, I traveled to Italy to perform my solo "the gentleness was in her hands" in the Danza Urbana - Festival Internazionale di danza nei paesaggi urbani. This Festival presents dance works all over the city in unconventional venues celebrating it's historic buildings and piazzas. Our program included two choreographers from Hungary and one from Bologna. I performed in the majestic Biblioteca Di San Gorgio in Poggiale which used to be a small church. Thank you to Massimo and Stefania for being such great hosts and finding the perfect space for this solo.

Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute Quartz Mountain
For two weeks in June, I was so fortunate to be a part of the Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute at Quartz Mountain. This exceptional summer program includes Acting, Creative Writing, Ballet, Modern Dance, Orchestra, Chorus, Drawing & Painting, Photography, and Film and Video. Specifically for Oklahoma High Schoolers, this intensive is free for all students selected through auditions around the state. As the modern dance component, I worked with a wonderful group of 18 students ranging from the ages of 14 to 19. Another amazing perk was the opportunity to bring a musician of my choosing. So, the incredibly talented John Wilson came to this secluded camp with me to play for daily classes, but especially to collaborate in the creation of a 20min work. "We Made This!" was performed to a full house on the last day of camp in the beautiful 1000 seat theater. Throughout the 2 weeks, John and I got a chance to get to know our fellow faculty through nightly lecture/demonstrations and performances. I performed "the gentleness was in her hands" during the first few days and was so impressed with the thoughtfulness of the students during the discussion that followed. Midway through the program, our group collaborated with the film students, led by film director Troy Word, to shoot on the beach at sunrise. It was impressive how much support we received for anything we wanted to try. The emphasis was really on process and collaboration. Thank you to the amazing technical crew, the helpful staff, our incredibly capable dance liaison Kristi Shaffner, president Julie Cohen, and vice-president Emily Clinton for making this all possible!
On the last day of class, we took the bus to the nearest town for pizza. John and I are on the left, Kristi on the right. |

The A.W.A.R.D.Show! All-Stars Joyce SoHo, New York City
Last June, Lindsay Fisher, Megan Harrold, HeJin Jang, Burr Johnson, Manelich Minniefee, and Rebekah Pleasant performed "Flight Distance II" as part of a shared evening at Joyce SoHo. It was wonderful to return to this familiar venue to share a new work that was created in part with last fall's winnings. Thank you to Linda Shelton, Cathy Eilers, and the staff at Joyce SoHo!

Teaching at the University of the North Carolina School of the Arts Fall 2011 and Spring 2012
I am so thrilled to be teaching at UNCSA for this academic year. It is very exciting to return to my alma mater as guest faculty along side my former teachers Trish Casey, Brenda Daniels, Sean Sullivan, as well as fellow guest faculty Juel D. Lane. Juel and I graduated in the same class and have worked together since, so its a bit like a reunion. It is really wonderful to return to this second home. Thank you to Interim Dean Brenda Daniels for this wonderful invitation!

University of the Arts Philadelphia
Two weeks ago, I traveled to Philadelphia to select students for a 10 person re-staging of my trio "Celui Qui Regarde." We had our first rehearsal Saturday and I was so excited at the talent and commitment of these powerful women. Longtime friend and former classmate Katie Swords-Thurman will be working with them throughout the term to teach and rehearse the intricacies of this detailed piece. They are scheduled to perform this work in December. Thank you Donna Faye Burchfield for making this possible!
