Company Season in NC
Winston-Salem, NC (March 24th and 25th)
| This past March, Helen Simoneau Danse held its first annual season at the Hanesbrands Theatre in Winston-Salem, NC. This evening featured three dance works, including two premieres. Flight Distance I, II, and III
explores the boundaries of personal space, unwritten spatial rules, and intimacy in relation to space.
It was quite an experience and I am so happy with how it all came together. Of course I did not do it alone and have to acknowledge the amazing efforts of Margaret Scales and Ralph Womble who both were instrumental in making this first home season possible.
The exquisite performers made the evening, and I am so happy and honored to share the stage with them! Thank you to Lindsay Fisher, HeJin Jang, Burr Johnson, Juel D. Lane, Manelich Minniefee, Rebekah Pleasant, Kristin Taylor, and Adrienne Westwood.
We were also so pleased to receive not only a generous preview, but also a great review in the Winston-Salem Journal. Both truly helped to spread the word about this production and most likely accounted for the capacity audience we had both nights. The house was practically full on the Thursday night performance and we sold out on Friday night having to add and extra row of seats! The amazing turn out was also due to the tireless efforts of our Honorary Committee. Through email blasts, Facebook, and the distribution of numerous posters and postcards around town, they were able to generate a buzz about this show.
The creation and performance of these works was made possible by:
The North Carolina Arts Council,
The Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County,
The Mary Duke Biddle Foundation,
The North Carolina Dance Alliance,
The University of the North Carolina School of the Arts,
The A.W.A.R.D Show! 2010: New York City,
and the contributions of generous individual donors.

 | Festival Vue sur la Relève
Montréal, Canada (April 16th)
| Kristin Taylor and I just recently traveled to Montréal to perform Flight Distance III: Chain Suite in the Festival Vue sur la Relève at the Montréal, Arts Interculturels. This piece is danced to the original music of Jonathan Melville Pratt. I also performed a new solo Flock* which features video by Jose Luis Bustamante and an original score by Jerome Begin.
It was really wonderful to return to this festival for the second time and this time perform to a sold-out house.
2-min glimpse of Flight Distance III: Chain Suite *The creation of Flock was made possible by a three-week residency
at Bates Dance Festival through the Emerging Choreographers Program.

 | Tour of Brazil
Salvador and Sao Paulo (April 18th-25th)
| Stacy Martorana just returned from a four-performance tour of Brazil where she danced the solo the gentleness was in her hands. She is the only person other than myself to perform this work. Stacy performed twice in Salvador at the VIVADANCA FESTIVAL INTERNACIONAL then headed to Sao Paulo for two performances at the 8th FORUM INTERNACIONAL DE DANCA.
This solo is really special to me and I am thrilled to have had the opportunity to share it with such an amazing performer and person. Thank you so much Stacy!
Thank you to Marcelo Santos, director of the Solo-Tanz-Theatre Festival, for inviting us to join this tour.

 | Hollins University
Roanoke, VA (Spring Term)
| This past term I have been living in Roanoke during the week and teaching at Hollins University where I received my MFA in 2009. It has been a rich experience to return and reconnect with many of the undergraduates that were there in 2009 and are now juniors and seniors. Thank you to all of the students and my fellow teachers Jeffery, Rodger, and Jesse for making this such a meaningful experience.

 | Oklahoma Arts Institute
at Quartz Mountain Teaching (June 11-July 25th)
| This summer, I will be teaching for the first time at Oklahoma Arts Institute at Quartz Mountain. During the two-week program, musician John Wilson and I will be putting together a 30min production with a group of 20 students. I am heading the modern dance portion of this program and will also be teaching daily technique classes.
The Oklahoma Arts Institute is a private, non-profit organization with a vision to cultivate established and emerging artists and educators through art workshops, immersion and awareness. Oklahoma high school students are selected through a statewide competitive audition process for a two-week, intensive arts academy every summer. All programs are held at the Quartz Mountain Arts and Conference Center in Lone Wolf, Oklahoma.
