The Vibe on the outside...is Peeling
Bob King charms another one |
Swiss vegetable Peelers
It is the end of June in the Nations Capital and at Eastern Market we are peeling... vegetables that is and sometime even all those wonderful fruits available under the farmers shed. Importer Bob King started at Eastern Market in 2002 selling these wonderful veggie peelers from Switzerland. He is one of only ten retailer of this product in the United States. He loves doing demos and with his deep, soft voice and Mr. Rogers vibe i.e. cool, calm and collected with sensible shoes he charms customers from D.C. to Washington State

Eastern Market Classics
Malien Lane at her stand
There are exhibitors who define the Eastern Market experience-Marlien Lane is one of the them. While not the 'Grand Dame' of Eastern Market Lynne Holland (importer of contemporary American Folk Art), Marlien Lane came to the Market in 1978 when her daughter was just three years old. Now Marlien can be heard regaling her customers about her granddaughter. Marlien has imported jewelry mainly from her native Thailand at Eastern Market for twenty-five years.
Becky Mensah...now and
Becky Mensah and Linda (Ma) Brown 1988
(Tom Rall archives) |
Becky Mensah with Linda (Ma) Brown [baker under the farmer's shed since the 1970s] back in 1988 as guests of Tom Rall (Founder of the Flea Market at Eastern Market) at his wedding reception held in Market 5 Gallery now the north hall of Eastern Market. In asking Becky how long has been an exhibitor at the Market she quipped" I don't remember 197? something I came a little after Angie". That is Angela Brunson of Blue Irish Flowers. Becky comes to us from Cape Coast, Ghana. She has been importing items for sale at the market as varied as hats, scarves and sun glasses and at present jewelry from Russia, Mexico and Indonesia. These women are a large part of the reason why Eastern Market survived, grew and prospered. Malien told me when she started at the Market in the late 1970's there were only about six exhibitors that came on the weekends.
