At Eastern Market there are exhibitors whose offerings are impossible to put in category.  Archelaus-Fine Cards- is one of them.  The elusive gentleman who runs this enterprise does not want to be named. However, every week he sends one of his minions to the Market to sell his wares.  Quoting from an email I was sent...

 Q. Where does Archelaus get its distinctive images? Are they drawn by your
in-house design staff?

A. Good heavens, no! That would require actual talent. The images used on
our cards are all vintage, out-of-copyright art, which we find in various
different places. Our chief card designer is often to be found in the
Library of Congress, for example, although it is my impression that he
spends much of the time only pretending to work, while flirting with
random passers-by.

Q. Where did the Egyptian mongoose illustration come from?

A. We took it from an exhibition poster printed in Strasbourg around 1580.

Q. What about the text on your cards?

A. With some of them, like the mongoose, the text is the responsibility of
that chief card designer of ours again. He is somewhat unhinged at the
best of times, but we try to give him what leeway we can. It seems to be
very therapeutic. Most of our blank notecards and postcards, on the other
hand, feature out-of-copyright quotations or proverbs. This is helpful in
avoiding lawsuits.

Needless to say the creator of Archelaus-Fine Cards- is a Wit and should not be missed. http://www.archelaus-cards.com

Smell the air, hear the beat, run from the crowd it's Cherry Blossom season in the Nations Capital so that means it's blossom time at Eastern Market.  We are in full bloom around the market.  Think M.C. Hammers famous song "It's Hammer Time" only substitute "it's blossom time" and you can feel my rhyme ( warning I can not rap)

The Hell Raiser says...

One of my favorite gospel songs goes something like this  "...those that wait on the lord
shall renew there faith..." Told you it was coming, worth waiting for wasn't it. However, it is starting off a little hot, just like I like it.  Happy spring ya'll.  Oh yeah don't forget that Mayor Fenty has declared April 19-24- D.C. Craft week, so come on out to the market and find some of the finest craft artists in the nation.

As always check out the happenings at http://www.easternmarket.net .  Have you read there latest news letter.  Sadly this might be there last year. Let's make sure that does not happen.
