From the Desk of Mr. Smullen, Interim Principal...

  • As many of you know, Beloit Memorial's Principal Dr. Jenkins accepted a job in Saginaw, Michigan as their superintendent of schools.  He always said, "Dare to dream because no one can tell you what you can't do."  We applaud him as he begins this opportunity and our staff wishes him and his family the best.
  • On behalf of the staff at Beloit Memorial High School, I welcome you to the remainder of the 2009-2010 school year.  My name is Mark Smullen and I am Beloit Memorial High School's Interim Principal.  This is my third year in an administrative position at BMHS, and this school's spirit and dedication to diversity is paramount to our success here at Beloit Memorial.

  • Welcome back to the BMHS  Administrative Team Assistant Principals David Luebke and Dr. JB Elzy.  Their service to the School District of Beloit and our community is limitless, and we welcome their service to our student body.

  • Congratulations to our Advanced Placement students who are taking their much anticipated AP exams this month.  We wish you the best on your exams.  Last year, BMHS students took 202 AP exams and 432 ACT tests and earned $3.4 million in grants and scholarships.
  • Our proud traditions will be on full display this month as BMHS edges closer towards graduation.  BMHS students will be awarded this month for their dedication to academics, athletics, theatre, military service and music.  Check out our Evening of Jazz, incredible choir and award winning Orchestra.

  • Celebrate with us as our Academic All-Stars Awards  presented on May 12th for grade 9, 10 and 11 students.  Outstanding academic and departmental awards will be presented to our students who have dedicated themselves to their academics.  On Wednesday, April 19th, come and see our best and brightest at the Senior Academic Scholarship Awards.
  • Returning this year are the BMHS Athletic Awards.  Our Athletic Director, Steve Ferger, has brought this honored tradition back to Beloit Memorial.  The athletic teams and individual sports will reflect and celebrate this year's accomplishments. This will be held on June 9th.

  • Continue Purple Knights as you "Dare to Dream" because no one can hold you back in what you believe you can do.  Take your passion with you and continue doing the little things right until the big things come easy.  Enjoy the rest of the year and continue making Beloit Memorial proud of all past, present and future Knights.

Prom/Graduation Tips

The prom and graduation activities soon will be here and so is the possibility that your kids may be offered alcohol and/or drugs as part of their celebration.  As parents, you are the most important prevention specialist in their lives.

Research shows that every day kids confirm the fact that you, the parents, make a critical difference in whether they use alcohol or drugs.  When they are faced with the choice whether to use alcohol or drugs or not, the relationship between you and your child will be the most important determining factor.  Your influence is the strongest.  Parents remember - you are the most important group in the fight against alcohol and drugs.

You can make a huge difference in your teen's life.  Here are a few helpful prom and graduation tips (for everyday also).

¨        Set clear rules and discuss in advance what expectations of behavior you have and what the consequences will be if violated.

¨        Set a curfew time for prom and graduation.  It may be negotiated, but it should be strictly enforced.

¨        Set clear rules about no alcohol or drug use.

¨        Absolutely no riding with someone who has been using alcohol or other drugs.

¨        Make sure that if they go to a party, that you contact the parents.  Make clear to the parents your expectations of no alcohol or drug use at the party and that you expect that there will be adult supervision at all times.

¨        Do not allow your kids to go to hotels, motels or after Prom and Graduation parties.  This is trouble waiting to happen.

¨        Be awake when your teen gets home.  Ask questions.

¨        Remember, providing alcohol to non-family minors at home parties is illegal. Providing alcohol to non-family minors at home parties is illegal. It could result in a fine of $428 per child.

The Beloit Police Department, together with the School District of Beloit, encourages you to talk to your students about the consequences of alcohol use.  Let them know that drinking alcohol leads to risky behaviors, such as driving while intoxicated.

Let's make this prom and graduation a happy, fun experience for all kids.  It begins with you, the parents, by setting limits and boundaries and communicating these expectations to your children.

Frequently Asked Questions
Have you checked out this section of the Guidance web site?  On it you'll find quick answers to a variety of questions from getting a work permit to searching for scholarships.  www.sdb.k12.wi.us/memorial/guidance

Parents:
Make sure that you know where your son/daughter is academically. You need to understand how many credits are needed to meet BMHS graduation requirements, how many credits your student currently has, and if they are on track to graduate. Also, do they have the right classes selected to get into the post-secondary school of their choice?

Remaining ACT Test Dates
The last ACT test of the year will be given at Janesville Parker & Craig HS and U-Rock on June 12th, 2010. College-bound juniors who did not take the April test are encouraged to take this one. The registration deadline is May 7. Late registration with additional fees is available until May 21st. You can register online at www.act.org or pick up a packet in the Guidance Office

Looking For a Job?
The Job Center (1900 Center Ave, Janesville) can help. They have staff especially designated to help people looking for full time work identify their skills and find jobs to match. Many employers conduct interviews and hire only through the Job Center.  Drop in anytime before 5:00 p.m. daily.

College Orientations
We encourage you to sign up for the first available freshman orientation date this summer for your college.  Usually at orientation you will chose your first semester classes and those classes fill quickly. You do not want to be shut out by procrastination.

Wisconsin Private College Week
Wisconsin's private colleges and universities invite students, especially juniors, and their families to explore their postsecondary options during Wisconsin Private College Week, July 12-17, 2010.  All of the 20 private colleges and universities in our state will be holding "open house," and many plan special events that week.  As a bonus, students will receive a waiver of application fees at each campus they visit.  Don't just show up-call and make an appointment, 800-433-4733. More information is available at www.wisconsinmentor.org

Seniors, Don't Quit Now!
If you are hoping to attend college in the fall and plan on graduating from college, you need to be at the top of your game to be successful.  Remember that all admission invitations are provisional and based on how you finish your senior year. You don't want to run the risk of being denied.

.Important to Seniors
  • Minnesota-Wisconsin Reciprocity  forms now available in the guidance office or online at www.heab.wi.us
  • Please notify Mrs. Grace-McKinley at 361-3209 about scholarships received by May 1 if you want that information included in the Senior Awards program.
  • The Senior Scholarship Awards program will be May 20 at 6:30 p.m.  Everyone is welcome to attend and honor our senior award and scholarship winners.
  • Remember to notify the colleges you have decided not to attend. They are holding a spot for you while your friends are wait-listed and worrying.
  • And speaking of "holding" spots, make sure you get your deposit in on time or you will lose yours.
  • Students are reminded that if their college or technical school requires a final transcript, they must order one from Mrs. Cavitt in the guidance office.
Off to College??  Beware....
Before heading off to college (and once there), you will be bombarded with mail for checking accounts, free CD's, refrigerator rentals, phone cards,  and a thousand other things that someone will say you must have.  The truth is you can probably do without any of those offers.  Before you start filling up your dorm room with a refrigerator, microwave, stereo, TV/DVD, etc., check with your roommate.  Dorm rooms are small and there is no need for two of anything listed above, so find out what your roommate has and work out a share agreement.  Another thing to beware of credit card offers.  As a college student, you will get many offers, don't be suckered in!!  Interest rates are high and credit lines are easy to get, even with no income.  Learn to shred those offers into the recycling bin.  You will probably leave college with enough debt without personal credit card debt also.

College-Bound Juniors: A Timeline
1. If at all possible take the June ACT.
2. Visit colleges this summer.
3. Make your first and second choice decisions
4. Take challenging classes in your senior year.
5. Make a resume if you don't have one.
6. You can begin applying Sept. 15. You should plan on having all applications sent before
     Thanksgiving.
7.  Begin looking for scholarships in September.

9.  Keep checking this newsletter for senior year deadlines.

Junior Parents
It's not too late to schedule a meeting with your student's counselor to talk about career and post-high school plans and other questions you have.

College Pre-View Visits
Juniors, this coming summer is the perfect time to start making campus visits of those colleges/universities you are considering attending.  Do not show up unannounced, call the admissions office beforehand.  Many campuses have planned visitation days.  Take your parents with you - they need to be a part of this decision-making process.  If you are going to visit a private     college or university, try to do it during Wisconsin Private College Week in July.  A benefit of a visit during this time is an application fee waiver should you decide to apply. If you want to tour a UW campus, you can find out preview dates and make reservations at http://uwhelp.wisconsin.edu/gearingup/campusto

YOUTH OPTIONS PROGRAM:
Students, you must sign up for any desired classes through the Youth Options Program no later than October 1st...  This is the cut-off date to turn in your Youth Options form for the spring semester courses. Remember, you always sign up for a class the semester before the class actually begins.
You can pick up a Youth Options form in the Guidance Office. Mr. Jon Watson is the contact person for the Youth Options Program.

SCHOOL DISTRICT OF BELOIT SEXUAL HARASSMENT POLICY
In helping our students learn to show respect and appreciation for others, we would like you to review the School District of Beloit policy on sexual harassment and share your expectations with your child. The influence of media, along with what children observe in the world around them, often may lead to false impressions about appropriate treatment of others in the area of sexual conduct. Listed below are some of the common issues we see with students in this area:

·       verbal harassment or abuse, such as name calling

·       spreading rumors about a person's sexual orientation, sexual activity, or personal appearance

·       pressure for sexual activity

·       repeated remarks to a person with sexual or demeaning implications

·       unwelcome touching

For further information and support, please contact your child's school principal or student services staff.

The policies may be viewed online at http://www.sdb.k12.wi.us/ under the DISTRICT heading; Board Policies:

 411.1               Student Sexual Harassment

411.1 RULE 1   Student Sexual Harassment Administrative Procedures

Did You Ever Wonder...

Where did my child go?  Where is the person that I could chat with and joke with and laugh with?  Believe it or not, that child is still with you.  What has changed is they don't seem as open with you as they once did.  When they begin to pull back and maybe get snippy when you ask what you think is a simple question, then we, as parents, begin to shy away in order to avoid the snippy response.  Without meaning to hurt our feelings, our children effectively begin to shut us out of their lives at a time when they need our involvement the most.  Face to face 'discussions' begin to sound more like yelling matches than conversations.  We wonder "what did I do?"  The fact is that you probably didn't do anything.  Combine the emotional upheavals of the teenage years and the natural process of maturing and we have a relationship with our child that begins to change.  They begin to seek the ear of others, perhaps another relative, perhaps their best friend or perhaps the ear of their best friend's mother.  Painful? Yes!  Normal?  Yes!  Changeable?  Yes!   The way to begin to reconnect to your child is to start to listen more and talk less.  Take your child for a drive in the car.  Offer to drop a friend of theirs off after school and listen to the talk.  Take the time to ask your child what they think about something in the news, like poverty, politics, marijuana legalization, and the list goes on.  And honestly listen to the answers.  It is okay if they have a different opinion from you.  It is a time when they can learn from you and you can learn from them.  You have a summer coming up.  Use it to encourage discussions with your child.  Not orders to clean their rooms or do the dishes.  But meaningful, insightful conversations.
Jacqie Harding, School Social Worker, Beloit Memorial High School.
