KnightsGreetings!

I hope this newsletter finds everyone reflecting on the meaningful time we spent with our family and friends over the break.  As I reflect, it is hard to believe that we have completed nearly fifty percent of this academic year.  Time has really gone by fast as many of our students, staff and parents have experienced so many positive successes this year.  We were fortunate to start our year by returning to a beautifully renovated front entrance courtesy of Beloit's First Impression committee.  Instantly, we noticed how the renovations affected our students, staff, parents and guests in a positive manner.  Additionally, as I begin to look forward to the start of second semester, I am reminded of the powerful experience we had with the "CHALLENGE DAY" activity.  Because of Challenge Day, I am encouraged to see a greater number of students  participating in various service activities and attempting to "Be the Change".

Now as we near the end of our first semester, I am asking that all families plan to attend our "BMHS Expo"on January 26th & 27th.  We have redesigned the Expo to assist students and parents in understanding the wide range of academic and co-curricular offerings at BMHS.  Additionally, we are going to assist parents and students in selecting appropriate courses for the 2010-2011 academic year during the Expo.  We are making great strides with our academics, athletics and climate!

We are continuing our efforts to make a good school better.  Our goal is to be outstanding in every aspect of our school.  With the support of all students, parents and staff, we are certain that "Purple Knight Nation" will continue our tradition of great school pride and academic excellence!

Please make sure you read the calendar announcements enclosed. We hope to see you at the scheduled events showcasing our students.

ATTENDANCE NEWS AND PROCEDURES!!!

As our school year continues, it is important to remember BMHS attendance procedures.  Parents may excuse up to 10 days of absence per school year for illness.

1.  If your son or daughter is sick, or can not make it to school due to a doctor appointment or court appearance, the student must present a note in room B112 with Ms. Reed.

2.  As the holiday season rolls into spring and if your family will be leaving for a family vacation, please submit a note one to two weeks prior to your trip so school can provide your student with homework ahead of time.

3.  When your student is out sick for more than 3 days, they must return to school with a doctor's note.  When they are gone less than 3 days, they must return with a written note from you.  Please remember to include the following on the note:
                -The student's full name
-The date(s) the student was gone from school
-The reason they were gone from school
                -The parent/guardian's full signature
Without this information on the note, many times we are not able to enter the absence excuse; we cannot guess a student's name or the reason they were gone or the dates they were gone.  We depend on you, the parent/guardian, to give us that information - and according to  School Board Policy, we must have a written note.  Please, always be sure to write your note legibly in blue or black ink.

If you have questions regarding your student's attendance, please call your student's principal:
Freshmen (A-L)  Mr. Kaminski (361-3017)
Freshmen (M-Z) Mr. Smullen (361-3012)
Sophomores - Mr. Gustafson (361-3025)
Juniors - Ms. Jefferson (361-3011)

Advanced Placement Incentive Grant - Blending Learning Innovations:
Building a Pipeline for Equity & Access

BMHS is pleased to announce that we are the recipients of the Advanced Placement Incentive Grant.  The purpose of the grant is to improve student achievement, equity, and access by:
  • Increasing enrollment of low-income students in AP courses
  • Increase the number of low-income students taking AP exams
  • Supporting students to be successful in AP courses and exams
  • Articulation curriculum and instruction
  • Providing professional learning opportunities for development of school staff.
The grant strategies are as follows:
  1.  Increased access to AP courses using several delivery options for the targeted low-income schools.  The alternatives will be traditional face-to-face, interactive television, on-line, or a blended approach.
  2. Increase support to students and parents in middle school in the targeted low-income schools by providing professional learning opportunities for staff, incorporating student frameworks within the schools, and building community support structures.
  3. Increase affordability for AP courses within the targeted low-income schools by providing reimbursement for increased enrollment of low-income students and expansion of AP opportunities.
  4. Increase identification of and motivation for low-income students to participate in AP courses by providing funding for the PSSS to utilize the AP Potential service from the College Board and by offering scholarships for students who score a 3,4, or 5 on AP exams.
  5. Ensure each targeted school has a trained Local Education Guide to serve as the in-school liaison between the student, the parents (parent is used throughout this proposal to mean primary caretaker of the student) the AP teacher, and the district.
  6. Provide targeted professional learning opportunities to teachers, administrators, school counselors, and other school support staff in middle school and high school.  These opportunities will be designed to help staff align and scaffold content and skill development from middle school to high school.  It will include annual fall and spring conferences, an annual Summer Splash Conference that includes Vertical Team training and Horizontal Team training, as well as College Board-endorsed AP summer Institutes.
  7. Provide an on-line AP Professional Learning Community - these electronic communities will serve as an on-going resource to teachers, Local Education Guides, parents, and administrators.  They will provide opportunities for mentorship, content-specific webcast learning events, and dissemination of resources.
  8. Develop an AP Course in Mandarin Chinese that can be implemented statewide using existing resources and developing new ones.

Remaining ACT Test Dates
The ACT will be given February 6th and April 10th at BMHS & June 12th at U-Rock and Janesville Craig.  If college bound juniors have not yet taken the ACT, they should take the test on one of these dates.

ACT Prep Classes
Seniors...Need to raise your ACT score?  Before you take the test for a second or third time, consider an ACT Prep Class.  Classes will begin March 13th, 2010 for the April 10th test.  Classes will be held on three consecutive Saturdays and the cost is $25.  See Mrs. Grace-McKinley to sign up.

What You Need to Know About College Admissions
College admissions counselors have asked us to pass on this message to seniors, "Your favorable admissions decision is conditional.  You are expected to complete the senior year courses that you identified at the time of application, at the same, if not higher level of success, than your cumulative grade point average indicates."  Seniors must seek permission from colleges prior to making changes to their course selection after they have submitted an application and/or been notified of admissions for the fall of 2010.

Seniors - Financial Aid Paperwork
Parents of seniors who are planning on applying for financial aid should plan on completing their 2009 income tax forms ASAP in January.  You do not need to file your taxes at that time; however, you need to be as accurate on the FAFSA as you can about your wages, etc.  Since the FAFSA should be sent as soon as possible (before the schools give away all their money), doing taxes early is essential.

ASVAB
The ASVAB is the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery.  Part of the enlistment process involves qualifying for training programs.  If you are considering enlistment, you must take the ASVAB as a junior or a senior.  Taking the exam does not commit you to enlist in the military.

Student's Email Address
As students approach their senior year, they often rely on email to contact schools they are interested in attending and/or scholarship resources.  They may also use email to apply to colleges or for financial aid.  Unfortunately, many teens do not think this far ahead when deciding  their email addresses.  Please find out what your student is known by in the email world.

IMPORTANT: Parents of Seniors
It is imperative that you know the graduation status of your student.  Are they on track for graduation?  If you have any questions, call your student's counselor.

JUNIOR YEAR: Suggestions and Timetable of Events
          *Consider taking the PSAT test.
*Consult monthly guidance calendar and listen to the daily announcements for
            important information.
*Consider attending one of the Wisconsin Education Fairs to meet with college reps.
*Meet with college reps that schedule school visits to BMHS.
*Pick up an ACT/SAT registration packet and take the practice test.
*Plan to take your official ACT/SAT in April or June 2010.  Consider a campus visit
during vacations or during the summer.  Write for private or out of state
            applications.
          *Update your resume.
*If you are working part-time, seriously evaluate the pros and cons working has on
            your study time and grades.

Student Vaccinations
If your son or daughter is going to be living in a dorm next fall, Wisconsin Act 61, which took effect January 1, 2004, requires that he or she be vaccinated for Hepatitis B and Meningococcal Disease before moving into the dorm.  Most of our student have already received Hepatitis B vaccinations, but will have to be vaccinated for Meningococcal Disease.  This shot is only available at your private physician's office at a cost of about $80.

Unofficial and Official Test Score Reports
Most colleges and universities require freshmen applicants to send or arrange to send scores from the ACT (or SAT) to the campus.  If the word "official" is printed in the directions that usually means the scores have to come directly from ACT or SAT testing agencies.  You have the option of listing schools to get your scores when you register for the test.  These are official scores, as they come from the testing agency. If you need more official scores sent, you need to contact the testing agency yourself and have them send the scores, usually at a charge of about $10 each.  We can send a copy to the college or university, but the scores we send are "unofficial".  "Official" and "Unofficial" transcripts mean a different thing.  Official transcripts are ones that we at the school send out, with the principal's signature and the school seal.  Unofficial transcripts are copies that are sent by you.  Most colleges, universities, and scholarship agencies want official transcripts.  While you are a student at Beloit Memorial, we will send out as many transcripts as you want or need, no charge.  Once you graduate or leave the school, there is a $3 charge per transcript, or $6.50 for same day service.

College Goal Sunday
This year College Goal Sunday will be held on Saturday, February 20th at Beloit Turner High School.  Information and assistance will be provided to high school seniors and their families in filling out the FREE Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  This is the first and most important step in qualifying for financial aid.  Parents, if you have questions regarding what you must bring along with you, please call Mrs. Grace-McKinley at 361-3209.

Dental Care for Children

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Is your child unable to get dental care?  If so, the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile may be able to help.

The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile is a 40-foot mobile dental office on wheels.  It will be traveling to counties in south central and southwestern Wisconsin to provide dental care to children whose families have trouble getting dental care due to difficulties such as no dental insurance or financial costs.  The Care Mobile will be providing services in Beloit from January 4 - January 14 at the Rock County Health Department South Office, located at 61 Eclipse Center.

Dental services that will be provided on the Care Mobile include a dental exam, cleaning, fluoride treatments, x-rays, sealants (if necessary), and filling cavities.

Your child is able to receive dental care on the Care Mobile from a dentist and/or dental hygienist if your child is between the ages of 3 and 18 and is on Medicaid, Badger Care, or if you have no dental insurance and cannot afford to pay for dental services.  The Ronald McDonald Dental Van can only see you one time for it is not meant to be a permanent dentist.

If you would like more information on the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile or to schedule an appointment, please call the Rock County Health Department South Office at 608-364-2010.
