Greetings!
Welcome to our first Beloit Memorial High School online Newsletter. |
|
|
From the Principal's Desk Dr. Jenkins, Principal
I hope this newsletter finds all of our Purple Knight family members in good health and spirits. Our staff
remains excited about the enthusiastic crowd of parents that attended our Fall Parent Teacher Conference and responded to our request for individual parent meetings. Likewise, we are equally as excited about the number of students continuing to demonstrate positive behavior and attitudes in our classrooms and during our social events at Beloit Memorial High School. As a staff, we would like to thank all our parents for continuing to assist our students and staff in creating a positive and safe learning environment for everyone. We will begin administering the Wisconsin Knowledge and Concept Examination-Criterion Reference Test to our tenth grade students on Monday, October 26, 2009. Therefore, we would like to solicit the support of all tenth grade parents by encouraging you to make sure that your student does the following: 1. Get eight hours of sleep prior to the test, 2. Review the test-taking strategies provided by our staff, 3. Attend each day of testing, 4. Give their best effort on each test and 5. Don't stress about the test (remember, they are more important than the test). Given our level of preparation to date, I am certain our sophomores will do well on the state test. However, please make sure you take time to review with your child the items listed above. As we attempt to reinforce the academic and social expectations of Beloit Memorial High School, please be advised that I have attached a copy of the revised School Board dress code policy (443.1 Rule 2) for your review. I ask that you share this information with your student and encourage them to follow the school rules as outlined in the policy. I would like to commend the student body on their positive response to the enforcement of the policy. On an academic note, please be advised that we are continuing academic support for all students at BMHS:
- Providing Knight School from 3:30pm - 5:30 pm for those students
who are credit deficient
- Providing tutoring before and after school
- Providing additional support for freshmen students during our
applied academic time -see attached
- Encouraging students to take Advance Placement classes. Results
of our Advanced Placement Exams - 2/3 of the students taking the exam scored a 3 or higher on all exams taken (A score of 3 indicates the potential earning of a B in a college level course).
- We are currently investigating ways to provide additional support
for our students and staff in co-taught classes. In closing, we are continuing to see progress in academic and
co-curricular areas. I am certain with the strong partnering of our parents and community, Purple Knight Nation(PKN) will continue our pursuit of excellence. |

BMHS Guidance News for November-December
Waiting Lists at Blackhawk Tech Blackhawk Tech currently has waiting lists for several programs for next
year. As soon as your senior decides that BTC is the right place for him/her, he/she should apply. See your counselor for details. Homework Requests When your teenager is out ill for several days, we are happy to collect
homework for you. However, our staff requests 24 hours to get it together. You can request homework at 361-3029. Make sure to state your teen's name and the number of days you want work for, starting with the day he or she is first absent. PLEASE, remember to pick it up in the Guidance Office. It's OK to ask a student/friend to bring it home for you. ACT Test DatesThe ACT will be given at Beloit Memorial on December 12th, February 6th and April 10th. The test fee is $32.00. The writing Test is an additional $15.00. Seniors should take it as soon as possible. You can complete an on-line application at www.actstudent.org. Scholarship ScamsParents may be getting mail from various scholarship search businesses promising lots of scholarships and "free money" for your children. Beware!! No one can guarantee a scholarship. Scholarships are competitive and the companies doing this provide data only. They are not the ones making the selections. You should not have to pay to apply for a scholarship and searching is free on the Internet. See our website, www.sdb.k12.wi.us/memorial/guidance for links. College Entrance RequirementsThe UW System entrance requirements include four years (or credits) of English, three years of math beginning with Algebra I or Core Math 1, three years of science, and three years of social studies. Students need to be aware that these are MINIMUM requirements. All the schools recommend that a student take as many challenging classes as possible to prepare for the rigors of higher education. It is also important for the applicant to continue a rigorous course of study their senior year. Admission to all UW schools is competitive and selective. Any admission invitation is conditional upon successful completion of a student's senior year. Early graduation is discouraged. On-line application is encouraged. And for MadisonUW-Madison looks for more than four credits of English, at least four years each of Math, Science, and Social Studies and at least 2-4 years of a single foreign language. Most students accepted at UW -Madison have a GPA of at least 3.50 and an ACT composite of 26-30 and the written portion of the ACT is required. In the admissions process, extra emphasis is placed on the applicant's personal statement or essay, extra-curricular and community service, and recommendations included with the application. UW Madison requires on-line applications. Changes to Senior ScheduleSeniors, if you have applied to or been accepted to any college or university, you cannot change your schedule until you get written permission from those schools. Your acceptance decision is partially based on your senior year curriculum and if you are contemplating a change, the admissions offices need to know about it. Campus Preview Days Most colleges have special preview days for prospective students at
various times throughout the year. (Almost all the UW campuses have these during state teacher convention at the end of October.) These events are a good opportunity to see the campus and get the "inside scoop" from students currently attending. Wisconsin Private Colleges/Universities In addition to the many public universities in the state, Wisconsin has
twenty private schools not supported by taxpayers, thus costing more for tuition and fees. The financial aid packages offered by these schools many times surpass anything the public universities may offer, thus making them affordable for all. Many times the total price the parent pays is the same, regardless of public or private. Need more information? Call 1-800-4-DEGREE.
Paying for College or Technical School So many students think that scholarships will pay for their higher
education. Sadly, for the majority, that is not the case. While scholarships range from $100 - full costs, the average student receives only a few hundred dollars, if anything, in scholarships. The majority of financial aide is in the form of student loans. The solution? Save, save, save. Have a realistic conversation with your teen about costs. As a fall-back plan, choose a less expensive school. Apply for financial aide, and then make your final choice. The least expensive way to get a college education? Attend a 2 year college and then transfer to a 4 year UW campus as a junior. Be prepared, take a full load, don't drop classes, and graduate in 4 years. Fee Waivers for College & Tech School Applications and TestsFee waivers for the ACT and some college, university, or technical schools applications are available to those students who are on free or reduced hot lunch. Students must apply for free/reduced hot lunch to qualify by filling out the application. Forms are available in the main office. Applying for Financial Aid??If so, get your PIN number now. Whether you apply on-line or use the paper application, having a PIN number will allow you to make corrections quickly and easily. A PIN is an electronic signature that is required if you apply on-line. Log on to www.pin.ed.gov to get yours. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will be available on-line January 1. Be sure to file as soon as possible because some aid is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Get your 2008 Federal and Wisconsin Income Tax information together to complete these forms. To calculate your college costs check out www.nelnet.com/collegeplanning www.nelnet.com/collegeplanning for online calculators that can quickly show you the difference every penny of debt can make when it's time to repay your loans. A Resume will enhance your chances of getting a job, being accepted into college, or maybe winning a scholarship. Do you have yours finished? If you need a sample or a template, go to wiscareers.wisc.edu or access.bridges.com Check Out Our WebsiteThe guidance website, www.sdb.k12.wi.us/memorial/guidance has over 500 links to information about helping your son or daughter make decisions concerning careers, colleges, technical schools, the military, apprenticeships, financial aid, scholarships, etc. Check it out. Did You Know?It now takes an average of 5 years 8 months to get a "4-year" college degree. Ways to speed this up? Don't change your major. Don't drop classes. Prepare well so that remedial course work is unnecessary. Take a full load of credits. Pass everything. Why College???

U.W. LaCrosse If you are thinking about applying to the University of WI LaCrosse do
so early and turn in your housing request. They have demolished two of their dorms to make way for new ones. However, this leaves the university with 700 fewer dorm rooms for next year. If you delay, you might be sharing your room with two or three other students. |
Literacy Incentives at BMHS
Did you know that the "Knight Readers" book club had its informational meeting on Tuesday, October 6? Twenty five students were in attendance and 17 joined on the spot! The book club began with discussing the book, Of Beetles and Angels by Mawi Asgedom and attending a "Question the Author" and book autographing session following Mr. Asgedom's appearance at BMHS on Friday, October 16. Mr. Asgedom spoke to BMHS students and inspired the Purple Knights in attendance to work hard and stay in school. The book describes how he rose above the worst of circumstances to be successful in American society. To quote Mr. Elliott who had his World Cultures class also read the book and attend the assembly, "His story is a testimony to the power of education and the impact that the support of family can have on the individual." Parents are to be commended for embracing our "WOW" or "Words of the Week" initiative. This is a weekly email sent to parents with the "Words of the Week", their definitions and how to use the words in sentences. If you have not shared your email address with BMHS, now is the time to do that and you too, can receive this weekly email and support this effort at home. This partnership between home and school is helping BMHS students develop vocabulary skills. Teachers are directly teaching this weekly vocabulary as well as vocabulary relevant to their content areas. Students are encouraged to use all new vocabulary on a regular basis. Thanks for reinforcing it at home. Finally MAP or "Measures of Academic Progress" information will be
in the hands of freshmen parents. If you need any assistance in
interpreting your student's reading skill information, please don't hesitate to contact your student's teacher or Mrs. Brossard directly. The freshmen teachers and Mrs. Brossard will be working together to understand and address the literacy needs of the students. This is a valuable tool to help teachers differentiate instruction and is being used across the district in grades K - 9. |

As you may have heard, a new influenza virus called the H1N1 (Swine) influenza virus, was first identified in the United States in late April 2009. The virus has caused illness ranging from a mile to severe, including hospitalizations and deaths in adults and children. Many children have had H1N1 infection and there have been large outbreaks in some schools across the country.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices has recommended that children and young adults aged 6 months through 24 years be vaccinated against 2009 H1N1 as soon as the vaccine is available. Other groups recommended to get the first available doses of the vaccine include:
- Pregnant women
- People who live with or care for childrn younger that 6 months of age
- Health care and emergency medical service workers, and
- People ages 25 through 64 years who have chronic health condition
Vaccination is the best way to protect your child from this potentially
serious disease. The Rock County Health Department is working with your school district's community to give the H1N1 (Swine) influenza vaccine to people at risk.
Here is the information about the H1N1 vaccination clinics in your district:
Tuesday, November 3, 2009 (3:00 pm - 7:00 pm)
Converse Elementary School, 1602 Townline Ave.
Wednesday, November 4, 2009 (3:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Aldrich Middle School, 1859 Northgate Dr.
You must be present with your child in order for your
child to be vaccinated. There will be no cost to you for this vaccine. This clinic is scheduled in advance of the suppy of H1N1 delivery to our community. The date will be rescheduled if the vaccine does not arrive in time for the clinic.
Questions? Please call the Rock County Health Department's H1N1 flu hotline at 608-741-5200. Please visti the CDC's 2009 H1N1 influenza web site at www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/ and also www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/parents for information especially for parents. Your child's health care provider also can answer your questions about the H1N1 (Swine) influenza virus and may be able to give your child the vaccine.
