SABERCAT PRIDE
                          Educating to Excel August 2012
b&w doublesabercat

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Greetings and welcome to school year 2012-13!

In case you have not yet heard the wonderful news, Sabino was (for the second year) designated by the Arizona State Department of Education an "A" school.  You may recall that ADE has moved away from its past rating system (where we were Excelling for many years) to the new letter grade designations.  I am proud to say that we have the distinction of being one of only two TUSD high schools with an "A" rating.  Thank you for sending us students who have a focus on high academic achievement; without our students' fine test scores and the quality instruction delivered daily by Sabino teachers, we would not enjoy this acclaim.

By the time this issue of the Sabercat Pride reaches you, we will have hosted several of our annual events here at Sabino:  New Student Orientation (July 31); Student Council's "Welcome Back" assembly (Aug. 10); Cats Win (Aug. 16); Freshman Orientation on Students Rights & Responsibilities (Aug. 17); and Open House (Aug. 22).  I hope that you were able to attend many of the aforementioned and that I will see you at Parent/Teacher Conferences on September 19.

Because the South Korean government was so impressed with the exchange experience that their students had with Sabino (and two TUSD middle schools) last January, our Superintendent and we three Principals were guests of the South Korean government this summer.  We had the opportunity to visit the sending Korean schools and out of that, our relationship with the TKAP (Tucson Korea Ambassador Program) was strengthened.  We anticipate that our Korean partners will once again be sending students/ambassadors for another month-long stay in January.  With that said, please know that we will need host families for our Korean students.  As I get more information on this year's exchange, I will share it with you in hopes that we can make this year's exchange an even better experience.

As fall approaches, it is not too early to begin thinking about your Tax Credit donations.  For the fourteen years that I have been a part of the Sabercat family, our students have benefitted greatly through your generous donations.  Thank you in advance for your continued support.

The Sabino Professional Learning Community is committed to the success of your student(s).  Please call me at 584-7704 if you feel I can be of assistance to you and/or your student(s).
Sincerely yours in education,

SENIOR NEWS:

On Monday, September 10th, seniors will have an opportunity to hear presentations from 4-year and 2-year colleges at the Fall College Visitation on Sabino's campus.  Afterwards, counselors will make a presentation to seniors about graduation and becoming prepared for

life after Sabino.  Seniors will be encouraged to print their Senior Handbook from the Language Arts Department website.  The website address is http://edweb.tusd.k12.az.us/Sabino/LanguageArts.html

This handbook provides helpful information about planning for the

future. Please ask your senior to share their Senior Handbook with

you.

We encourage seniors to apply to colleges before October 1st
to increase their chances of obtaining scholarships and
financial aid.
Seniors are encouraged to listen carefully to the daily announcements during 1st period and check the Bulletin Board on the Parental Access page for special senior announcements and
scholarship listings.  These announcements come from administrators, teachers, and the Counseling Office.  If students are interested in any
of the scholarships that are announced, they can come to the
Counseling Office and look through the scholarship file for the for the application. Seniors should also use our Sabino website and the Career Center resources to help find scholarships and other pertinent information. The counseling page on the Sabino website (http://edweb.tusd.k12.az.us/Sabino/counseling/) will be updated
weekly with scholarship and college visit information. The three major state universities have representatives on campus on a regular basis. In addition, many representatives from out-of-state schools and from the military visit Sabino. Have your student check with the Counseling
Office for visit times.

Seniors who have not taken an SAT or ACT test and are going

to a four year college need to take one as soon as possible.

Major colleges will not admit students without the appropriate test scores.  Many base academic scholarships are awarded based on

these scores.

Student athletes who intend to participate in athletics at a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) school need to register at http://www.eligibilitycenter.org .  Students who intend to participate

in athletics at a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics

(NAIA) school need to register at http://www.playnaia.org .

JUNIOR NEWS:

Counselors will make a presentation to juniors in September.

Students will be asked to print their Junior Handbook from the Language Arts Department website.  The website address is http://edweb.tusd.k12.az.us/Sabino/LanguageArts.html .  The

handbook provides helpful information about planning for the future

and includes many resources to help students as they think ahead to college and career.  Please ask your junior to share the Junior Handbook with you.

This year's PSAT (the national qualifying test for National

Merit Scholarships) is being administered to all sophomores

and juniors on Wednesday, October 17th during school.  The PSAT is good practice for the SAT and if students perform well as juniors, they can qualify for competition for a National Merit Scholarship.  The PSAT is free at Sabino this year and is only offered once a year.  After taking the PSAT, the College Board can help prepare your student for taking the SAT by using their PSAT results.

Juniors who are college bound are also encouraged to take the SAT and/or ACT by the end of this school year, so their scores are available to send in with their applications during the summer.

There are several private companies in Tucson that offer more preparatory classes.  A list of these prep class options is available in the Counseling Office or can be found online at http://edweb.tusd.k12.az.us/Sabino/counseling/PSATSATACTAP.html.  Free SAT practice tests can be located at www.collegeboard.com

and on the counseling department website.

ZAPS will be offering a PSAT/SAT Seminar for test preparation at Sabino on Monday and Tuesday afternoons, September 10th and 11th, 2012, from 2:45 PM to 5:15 PM.  Cost is $89.  Students may register at www.zaps.com or call 1-877-927-8378.

PTSA
(Parent Teacher Student Association)

Hello Sabercat Families,

I hope everyone had a great summer and I hope your school year is off to a good start.  Your PTSA has been busy this summer helping at registration, answering questions at New Student Orientation and Open House and also provided a Welcome Back Breakfast for our teachers.  A special thanks to all our volunteers who helped with these events.

In addition to our Non-Event Fundraiser which is a grant programs to fund teacher requests, we are signing up families for the Safeway E-Script fundraiser.  Register your Safeway Club Card on-line at www.escrip.com.  Link your card to Sabino High School, group # 6629879.  Sabino will receive up to 2% of what you spend.  This fundraiser alone earned our school over $11,000 last year.  Your Safeway Club Card must be register each school year.  We are also set up with Fry's Cool Cash.  Pick up your Fry's Cool Cash barcode and link it to your Fry's VIP card once during the school year.  Just hand the barcode to the cashier the next time you go to Fry's.  You will help Sabino earn some "cool cash".

Our next PTSA meeting is Tuesday, August 28th at 12:30 pm in the Administration Building basement.  Everyone is welcome.  If you not able to attend or participate this year, consider joining our PTSA.  Our membership is open to everyone - parents, teachers, students, grandparents, business, and extending family and neighbors.  Joining does not obligate you to attend meetings or volunteer.  Your membership is showing support for your child and Sabino High School.  There are three types of memberships - $10 for individuals, $20 for Family (3 members) and $25 for a Business members (provide 2 business cards).

Thank you for your support.  I know this school year will be another successful year for Sabino.  I am looking forward to seeing you at our PTSA meeting.

SABINO FOUNDATION NEWS.........

Hello Sabercat Families!

It's hard to believe school is already back in session for almost a month.  I am sure all our administrators, teachers, staff and students are looking forward to another great year!  The Sabino High School Foundation is also ready for another great year.

What is the Sabino High School Foundation?  The Foundation was formed in the summer of 2009 in response to the state budget crisis and its effect on the school district's budget.  The foundation is comprised of a group of parents and concerned members of the community.  Our mission is to provide resources to support and enhance educational opportunities, services and activities of Sabino High School by making charitable contributions to academic, athletic, and extracurricular programs and to perpetuate the traditions and history of the school and its alumni.

Last year the Foundation established the Sabino High School Hall of Fame.  The Hall of Fame honors distinguished alumni and members of the Sabino community who through their performance and achievement in their chosen fields and communities, bring honor and distinction to the heritage of Sabino High School and provide a positive role model to current and future students.  The 2011 Inductees were Willie Wood, J.J. Hardy, Dan Hicks, Bruce Johnson, the 1986 Boys Golf Team and the 1979 State Championship tennis team.

This years Hall of Fame induction will be Friday September 15th at half time of the Varsity Football game.  The 2012 inductees are Jeff Kiewel; outstanding athlete, Ollie Mayfield; outstanding coach, Chris Edwards; outstanding alumni, Beth Oder; outstanding member of the Sabino community, Carl Roberts; outstanding Principal and the 1989 State Championship Girls Volleyball Team.  The inductees and their families will honored at a reception prior to the game and introduced to the community at half time.

The Sabino High School Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) charitable organization; all contributions are tax-deductible. If you would like to learn more about the Foundation and how you can become involved, please see our website at www.SabinoFoundation.org or email us at getinvolved@sabinofoundation.org

We look forward to seeing you all at the Hall of Fame Induction on Friday September 15th.

Sabino High School School News...

David Kukla in our Math Department was awarded the Arizona State AFA Teacher of the Year Award. Bob Anderson, AFA Tucson Chapter President, says of Kukla, "Parents and students brought Mr. Kukla to our attention for his
outstanding work at Sabino High School. His impact in promoting STEM among his students and peers has been significant and far-reaching. He is exceptionally innovative in his approach to provide his students a mastery of
mathematics through the use of cutting edge technology in authentic, real-world applications and problem solving. One example of many that demonstrates his hands-on integration of elements of STEM is his "21st Century Student Learning: Think Global, Act Local" project, in which students design and implement a green energy plan that reduces school resource use and energy costs. The project is designed to help students master the state's math requirements, and it is integrated into his algebra, pre-calculus,trigonometry, and AP Calculus classes. One of his goals is to help students realize their personal power by helping them create solutions to problems locally and tie that to issues globally. His students discuss energy use and climate change with kids in classrooms around the world using online resources such as IREX and Skype.

Mr. Kukla's expertise in mathematics and the ability to "think outside the box," combined with his passionate dedication and his willingness to embrace new technology and bring it into his classroom, make him uniquely effective in preparing his students to succeed in post-high school studies and STEM-related careers. He connects with students to a degree that few teachers ever achieve, and the results speak for themselves. Nearly all his students have scored 3 or better on AP tests, and over 60% scored a 5 (highest possible); these AP test scores allow his students to enter college with already-earned math credit and are able to enroll in more advanced math and engineering classes from the outset. The high number of his students who go on to pursue STEM-related majors in college is a tribute to Mr. Kukla's personal passion and his extraordinary effectiveness in teaching and
inspiring his students."

ECO CAMP CLUB

The students in Eco Camp Club had the chance to work with park ranger, Nick Massimo, on his search for gila monsters around Saguaro National Park East. Nick uses a special implant in the animal that allows him to zero in on the signal from it using a hand held antenna. When the gila monster is located, whether it is underground or in the surface, the time, cloud coverage, temperature at one meter and one centimeter, and gps coordinates are all checked and recorded for the specific gila monster. On the search for another gila monster Nick spotted an unmarked one and quickly ran over to capture it. Nick then went through the entire process that is needed to record and implant with a tracking device on the new addition. While he went through it the students had the rare chance to see the inside of its mouth lined with razor sharp teeth no larger than a quarter of a centimeter and to touch the beaded skin that covers its entire body.
