A thirsty refugee in Rome
The IAFR Report
International Association for Refugees
Greetings!
Tom AlbinsonA Christian leader in a Muslim country was recently forced to flee to a neighboring country after a sudden outbreak of persecution in his African homeland.

On the other side of the continent, a 20 year old refugee lost a battle with diabetes and passed away in Malawi.

These are just 2 stories from the 43 million forcibly displaced people in our world today. Thank you for your part in helping IAFR be there for them!

A Call for Help from "Brother H"

"Dear Brother in Christ,

I had to flee [my country] last week because of persecution. Someone has betrayed me and others by giving our names to a local newspaper, which has published our names and evangelistic activities. Some of my family members spoke serious, threatening words against me to my mother, so I have come to a neighboring country. One of our brothers was arrested today. Please pray for him and for me and the others who are suffering for the name of Christ."   -Brother H*.

This is an excerpt from an email received from Brother H in late 2010. He went on to say that his wife and children were in yet another African country. He  asked us to pray for God's provision so that they could be reunited.

We prayed and notified supporting churches of this need. Within a few weeks, we had enough in the IAFR Special Needs Fund to buy a plane ticket for Brother H. But as you might imagine, communication with a forcibly displaced believer in north Africa can be complicated. We lost contact with him. We continued to pray.

Thankfully, we learned earlier this month that God provided a way for Brother H to be reunited with his family -without assistance from IAFR.

Although we wish that we had been privileged to have  participated in God's provision, we have no doubt that God will honor this desire as future needs are brought to our attention.

Brother H ended his email:

"Please pray for the church in [my country] that Jesus will purify and strengthen us by His Spirit. Nothing is too difficult for God."

Indeed, our brothers and sisters in this north African country continue to need our prayers as they suffer imprisonment and displacement due to the recent outbreak of persecution.

Their faithfulness under such pressure is an inspiration to us all.

Wanted! Refugees and Immigrants
Abayneh family
Abayneh with his family
Abayneh Gurmessa grew up in Ethiopia. At the age of 14, he learned about the love of God and chose to follow Jesus. But his family was against his new faith and turned on him. He was forced to flee  home and spent the next 6 years living with another Christian.

His church later sent him to Bible School to prepare him for ministry as an evangelist, church-planter and pastor. Before immigrating to the USA in 2009, God had used Abayneh to plant 10 churches and to train others to do the same.

Abayneh joined IAFR in January to serve as a cross-cultural ministry consultant with  a church located in downtown Minneapolis. The church has asked him to help them  become a more ethnically diverse congregation.

The Twin Cities have a significant population of recently resettled refugees and immigrants from countries in Africa, including  Ethiopia and Eritrea. Many   live in neighborhoods near the church building.

Abayneh's extensive ministry experience and passion for the kingdom of God will serve him well as he engages in research, networking and outreach while consulting with the church.

It is good to see a local church actively seeking to include refugees and immigrants within the scope of their community.
The Loss of Moses Remy - Dzaleka Refugee Camp
Dzaleka -Moses Remy
Praying over Moses Remy 10/2010
Moses Remy died in Malawi on January 4th, 2011.

Like 43 million people in the world today, Moses Remy was a refugee. He found refuge in Malawi and lived with 11,000 other forcibly displaced people in the isolation of Dzaleka refugee camp.

Moses was never able to return to his country of origin. He was never resettled to a country where he could be treated for diabetes and live a normal life.

In spite of his suffering, Moses was a young man of faith with a kind spirit. His smile was contagious. He will be deeply missed by those who had the privilege of knowing him.

"We are sad for the loss of our friend Moses who died at Dzaleka Refugee Camp this week, aged 20, of diabetes - a treatable medical condition for those who have means, a death sentence for those forced to live in an African Refugee Camp."

Perspective
Praying refugee

"Seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper."

Jeremiah 29:7

This was God's word to Israel after they had been forcibly displaced into Babylon.

Refugee churches today can often be found seeking ways to  bless their country of refuge, even as they long to return to her homeland.
