When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around.  But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years.

Summer Programs
Flint Knapping, Wildlife Tracking, Traditional Bows

Flint Knapping- Friday July 9 - Sunday July 11th, 2010

Stone tools alone can turn any partial survival situation into a wilderness experience akin to the Garden of Eden.  The preparation and fashioning of such tools begins by rekindling within us a desire and passion to fuel the fire and help us learn the ancient language of the stones.  Not only do participants learn to shape various stones efficiently from a utilitarian perspective, they also learn to form a deeper respect for the earth through a keen understanding of how rock formations evolve from a geological point of view.

Wildlife Tracking -
Thursday July 15th - Sunday 18h, 2010

the Next Track tracking stickThis workshop lays the foundation for those wishing to learn the mysteries of wildlife tracking. Through understanding the principles of gait interpretation and animal physiology, students are able to learn the makers of the tracks in a very intimate way. Using Sand and Clear Print Classification, students set the baseline that can be subsequently built upon like a personal field guide. Students then move into interpreting debris, which encompasses how Compression Tracking works.  Finally, students delve into Sign Tracking, in order to connect the dots and turn lifeless compressions into intimate topographic maps of the track makers' very souls.

- 12 students maximum, apply soon to reserve your space.

Headwaters Gathering -- A Huge Success!

The 6th bi-annual Headwaters Gathering was a wonderful success, thanks to all the organizers and participants. The weekend was forecast to be full of rain-- but we opened the weekend with a song of celebration for the rain, and everybody took off their hats to join in full appreciation of the beautiful spring showers.

Workshops included "Quick Bows" "Modern Wilderness Survival" "Herbal Tea Party" "Cordage and Pitch" "Animal Tracking" and "Local Tree ID," "Early Morning Bird Sit" to name just a few. There was also a kids program, which was tonnes of fun and involved wild strawberry facepaint and bird-nest-spotting contests.

The trading blanket happened around an open fire and then moved into the barn (because of that beautiful rain!) and lasted well into the night. There were homemade preserves, tinctures and creams, hand-made jewelry, bow staves, animal hides, felted items, potted plants, books, stones, fossils and tools being moved from hand to hand, under many smiling faces.

What a great weekend. See you in the fall!
June Tour -Culture of Nature Connection
Dear friends,

Please consider joining us on June 25, 26 and 27 for talks and workshops with visionary educator and cultural engineer Mark Morey, founder of  The Vermont Wilderness School and The Institute for Natural Learning.

After an amazing speaking tour in March, Mark will be back in June to facilitate three more events which include a speaking event, a day-long workshop, and a youth rites of passage overnight program.

Speaking Event - Burlington, June 25th
Day-long Workshop - Norval Outdoor School, June 26
Youth Rites of Passage Overnight Program - Norval, June 26-27

These events are an easy opportunity to learn more about what Mark means when he speaks about Creating a Culture of Nature Connection as a way to build resilience future generations, and are a great lead-up to the 5-day Art of Mentoring program coming up this August.

The Art of Mentoring - Creating a Culture of Nature Connection and Awareness

Sticks & Stones Wilderness School is partnering up with the P.I.N.E Project and several other Ontario outdoor education groups to help bring this popular program to Canada for the first time this summer.

The Art of Mentoring is an innovative five-day overnight educational program designed to help individuals, families, and communities create healthier, happier environments to grow in. It uses a technique called "Cultural Mentoring", and through this, creates a culture of nature connection for adults and children of all ages.
The course includes concurrent programs for adults and children. Each program runs separately during the day, and in the evenings, sessions are designed to include all ages.

Adult Program: $550/person

The Art of Mentoring Adult curriculum is for anyone interested in finding new ways to connect with nature, personally, and with others. It provides a whole new way of experiencing the natural world, based upon vast amounts of research on ancient and modern strategies for creating a depth of nature connection in one's life.
Topics of focus for the program include, among others:
·       Telling stories that inspire
·       Expanding sensory awareness in self and others
·       Facilitating games that motivate learning
·       Growing your naturalist knowledge
·       Creating unstructured play by design
·       Lesson plan structure for nature connection
·       Incorporating visiting elders
·       Safely ID-ing Edible Plants and eating them

Children's Program: $220/Child

Children's and youth programming is structured in a day camp style with overnight experiences in the wilderness for older children. Essentially the children are out living the experiences that adults are learning to facilitate. In this way, each generation has stories to share on their nature based learning experience. Families are together at night, with Family oriented programming each evening, and a suggested bedtime of 9pm for younger children. Curriculum for kids includes nature based programming, camp games, and wilderness living skills.

Prices include food. There are limited numbers of cabins and wall tents to stay in, with priority given to young families and the elder generation. Tenting/Camping space is available for free and tents are available to rent as well.
