Foot on FireboardOn Fire at Hillside!

Last weekend at Guelph's annual Hillside Festival, we hosted free friction-fire workshops to the festival-goers. And what an incredible success they were!

Dozens of participants of all ages came together to learn the significance of making fire, and to share in the empowering experience of creating a coal using the bow-drill friction-fire method. We are incredibly pleased to announce that every single kit handed out to the groups was made to squeak, spin, and dance, creating at first that beautiful black dust, and then a glowing coal. The enthusiasm of the crowd was contageous, and many passers-by joined in the excitement. Many participants remained long after the workshop ended to continue practicing this sacred, ancient skill.

Fruits of Summer
We are pleased to bring you word from the field, forest and workshop via The Smoke Signal, our new e-newsletter.  We will keep you updated with the pages, ripped from our own journals, filled with the stories from programs, adventures from the back country, the latest on wilderness education and sustainable living in Ontario as well as provide the space for you to connect with those that live with a passion for life.

Joining forces with the local community Sticks and Stones Wilderness School has been busy creating a presence for the school and spreading the word about the unique skills that are coming back to the region like a wave of wild fire.

Here's what we've been up to:

~ We set up a booth at the Spring Plant Sale at David Warburton's   Gardens at Kingfisher Cottage in the Hockley Valley for a lively festival that brought together many natural skills enthusiasts and plant lovers.

~ For the youth of Erin and surrounding area we presented a skills demo at the Feathers and Nonsense Summer Fun Camp.

~ We teamed up with Silent Lake Provincial Park to provide free interactive and educational workshops to park guests and visitors involving wilderness survival and naturalist skills as well as wildlife tracking.

~ The Rockwood Farmers Market has become a weekend spot for us to set up our skills display and demo skills for the mixed local audience.

~ The Youth Outdoor Club at the North Peel and Dufferin Anglers and Hunters club were pleased to have us in to demonstrate friction-fire building and wildlife tracking skills.

~ The perfect community property has been located and negotiations are in the works to set up the school's baseline Caretaker project.  The Way of Caretaker-Art of Stewardship will be run this fall for the first time ever.  Keep an eye to the sky regarding how you can be involved in the evolution of this long term initiative.

This spring's Headwaters Gathering was held at Kimbercote Farm. The 110-acre farm nestled on the Western slope of the Beaver Valley is an ecological retreat centre, which turned out to be perfect for our biannual gathering. Several wilderness skills workshops, garden tours and caretaking activities comprised the rejuvenating weekend.

Back in our own Headwaters region, the Tracking Club continues to meet monthly for an enjoyable, educational tracking hike through our scenic natural habitat. Our next meeting is taking place on Sunday October 4, at the Hockley Valley Nature Preserve. We'll see you there at 10:00 am sharp. Email us at sticksandstoneswilderness@gmail.com for meeting place directions.

We are pround to see that the seeds we planted in 2003 with the Mill Creek Stewardship Project are continuing to grow.  Due to the success of estabilishing the long-term preservation of the riparian habitat along Mill Creek, the ecosystem was ready for a second phase of tree planting and stream clean up 6 years later.  The Town of Orangeville, Credit Velley Conservation Authority and partners teamed up to bring together 60 + volunteers of all ages.  We were able to see it first hand while pitching in ourselves on that sunny day.

We are currently planning a fall stewardship event, and will announce the details soon.

We are proud to note that many of our students have been reaching out and giving encouraging feedback regarding the success they are having with the integration the skills they have learned in the Empowering Ancient Ways course, The Traditional Bow Building workshop and the Nature Awareness Skills classes we have been offering locally in Caledon at the Sticks & Stones Workshop.   As your passion for the skills grow we are here for you and are offering many advanced programs to feed the need of your passion.  Listed below in the Upcoming Events section you will find the answers to your questions and The Next Track.

We would like to thank all the landowners who have taken the initiative to implement sustainable managment on their land and become stewards of their properties by joining the Managed Forest Tax Incentive Program (MFTIP).  This year alone Sticks & Stones' very own Skeet Sutherland, MFTIP plan approver, has prepared more management plans than over the past three years combined, and has helped sustainably preserve over 575 acres of forested land throughout southern Ontario.  Clients of Sticks & Stones' unique consulting services consistently remark that they never knew they had so much to take care of and now that they have a plan "it really does not seem intimidating to act on the responsibility."
