Dec. BOE Meeting Highlights

New high school courses, a new food services manager, and new programs at Regional Day School were among the items discussed at the December 21, 2011 meeting of the Manchester Township Board of Education.

New Courses at HS
Alex George, Principal of Manchester Township High School, reviewed new course offerings for next year designed to address some important needs for advanced courses and for meeting new state graduation requirements in Visual & Performing Arts.

New Food Service Manager
Superintendent of Schools, David Trethaway, thanked Jeff Hanaway, district Food Services Manager, for his work over the past six years that ultimately led to the district's three elementary schools receiving the Healthy U.S. Schools Challenge Silver Award.  Hanaway introduced his successor, Rob Mastropolo, who comes to Manchester from Lakewood schools.

Kevin's Kids Report
Kevin Burger reported on the success of the district's Kevin's Kids holiday drive and thanked all the volunteers, donors and supporters for their help.  "It was our most successful Kevin's Kids Drive ever and it is truly a community effort," he said.

New RDS Programs
Regional Day School Principal, Ralph Lotierzo, explained two new proposed programs, an After-Care program for current students and the TOPSS program (Transitional Opportunities and Post Secondary Services) for clients 21 and older who are no longer eligible to attend RDS. Manchester's local educational community access channel on Comcast cable recently re-launched with new programming.   Channel 21, known as MTHS-21, has been operating since 1996, based at Manchester Township High School.  In 2007, the station's broadcaster broke down and since then the channel was used only as a message board service.

"After years of fundraising and a very generous donation from Manchester Township Education Foundation, we were able to purchase a new digital broadcaster," said Station Manager & Video Arts Teacher Keith Eckert. "The emphasis will be on educational programming and information.  Our objective is to serve as the local source for news and information about the school district.  The station will also cover some local community news, information and events.  All of the station content is produced and edited by the students."
