Staff Trained for New Anti-Bullying Legislation - Oct 3-6 is Week of Respect
 | |
Paula Rodriguez-Jones speaks to staff about new anti-bullying laws |
The entire staff - from teachers to bus drivers to custodians and secretaries - has participated in training about the new state anti-bullying legislation, according to Superintendent of Schools, David Trethaway.
He said that the new policy, called HIB (Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying), reinforces what the district already has in place. It requires a trained "Anti-Bullying Specialist" to be in place at each school, charged with investigating all reported incidents of bullying and reporting their findings to administrators for further action. He noted that it does not preclude administrators from taking immediate disciplinary action if they deem it necessary.
The new policy designates the week of October 3-6 as a "Week of Respect" to include related activities at all schools.

Changes Improve Elementary Instrumental Music Program
At the September BOE meeting, Superintendent Trethaway announced a transfer of music teachers. Mr. Apgar is moving from a split position at Whiting/RDS to full time at MTES and Mr. Scharibone is moving from MTES to Whiting. Mr. Trethaway explained that this would allow Mr. Scharibone to spend three-fifths of his time teaching regular music classes at Whiting and two-fifths of his time teaching instrumental music lessons to elementary band students at all three elementary schools. The in-school instrumental music program was cut from the budget last year but was maintained as a before-school extra-curricular program directed by Mr. Scharibone. Mr. Trethaway said the program was a huge success, with about 100 students participating, however, the fifth graders coming into the program this year were at a disadvantage because they had no prior lessons as they had last year.
"The arts are very important, and we try to hang on to that," he commented. "This transfer of assignments will make it possible to maintain and even improve our instrumental program despite the loss of a teacher over two years ago."
