Newly Renovated Auditorium Opens

The newly renovated Manchester Township High School auditorium opened to the public with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on December 10, prior to the start of the school's annual Hawkapalooza Lip Sync Contest fundraiser.

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

HS Principal Alex George, SGA President Sarah E., BOE Member Donald Webster, SGA Rep. Andrea R., Superintendent David Trethaway, and SGA Vice Pres. Blake B. at ribbon cutting ceremony.

Superintendent of Schools, David Trethaway, said he was happy to be opening the auditorium with a student-run event 'because that's what it's all about.' He thanked everyone who had input into the project, which provided new lighting and sound systems, seating, curtains, rigging and a projection system.

Trethaway also recognized the previous administration for the initial planning of the $8.3 million construction bond referendum passed by Manchester voters in September 2009. The referendum also provided athletic field work and a solar panel project at the high school, as well as carpeting, roof repairs, and other work throughout the district.

Board of Education member, Donald Webster, Jr., thanked the Manchester voters for their support of the referendum and said he hopes the 'new' auditorium will be enjoyed by both Manchester students and the community for many years to come.

Family Literacy Center Opens at RS

Mom and student browse materials in literacy centerMuffins with Mom was the kick-off event for the new Ridgeway Family Literacy Center. Students were invited to bring their Moms in for muffins and to spend time engaging in literacy activities with them.

School Literacy Coach, Mrs. Barbara Bastian, presented some ways to help children choose 'good fit' books in order to foster confidence and enjoyment during reading. One method she described uses the acronym IPICK: I for Ichoose a book; P for Purpose (Why do I want to read it?); I for Interest (Does it interest me?); C for Comprehend (Am I understanding what I read?); K for Know (I know most of the words).

Moms and their children then explored the materials in the Literacy Center, located in a hallway alcove, before returning to the Media Center to sit and read together before the school day started. [read more]
