Community Supports Kevin's Kids

Ridgeway students in the lunch line wearing pajamasElementary students throughout the Manchester Township School District supported the district's annual Kevin's Kids holiday drive by donating $1 each for the privilege of wearing their pajamas to school. Pajama Day was a huge success at MTES, Ridgeway and Whiting schools, with the majority of students and staff sporting their favorite pajamas, robes and slippers for a good cause.

Kevin Burger accepts check from Patrolman MorganThe Manchester Township PBA donated $3,000 to the district's annual Kevin's Kids Drive. Manchester Twp. Police Department Patrolman Pat Morgan, the School Resource Officer at Manchester Township High School, presented the check to drive founder Kevin Burger.

"The PBA has always been there for Kevin's Kids and has once again come through for us in a big way. We really appreciate their support of our drive and their support of our students every day," Burger remarked.

The Manchester PTA also donated to the drive, as have many local community organizations.

It's not too late to help. Donations will be accepted through Friday, Dec. 10. Checks may be dropped off at any Manchester School or mailed directly to Manchester Middle School, 2759 Ridgeway Road, Manchester, New Jersey 08759. Make your check payable to 'Manchester Middle School,' with a notation of 'Kevin's Kids' in the memo section.

Music Programs Thriving - Concerts This Month

Elementary Band Program Saved from Budget Cuts
Students performing in bandThe Manchester Township School District Combined Elementary School Band will perform for the public on Monday, Dec. 13 at 6:30 p.m. at Ridgeway Elementary School. There are 79 fifth graders in the band, playing violin, bass guitar, guitar, bells, drums, saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, flute, and keyboard.

The elementary band program was in danger of elimination this year due to budget cuts. The elementary instrumental music teacher position was cut, but the band was saved by changing it to a before-school program, with Mr. Scharibone from MTES directing the band on a stipend basis. Students from Ridgeway, Whiting and MTES meet before school at Ridgeway. [read more]

High School Band Growing

The Manchester Township High School Winter Concert will feature both the Band and Chorus on Wednesday, December 15 at 6:30 p.m. in the newly renovated MTHS auditorium.  The concert was listed incorrectly on the district calendar for Dec. 14.

The music program at the high school is growing in size and talent, says new Band Director Ray Sinclair.  "We have nearly 30 musicians in the Jazz Band alone," he said.  "We would really like to see the community come out and support our music program while enjoying an entertaining evening that will get everyone into the holiday spirit.  It is also a great opportunity for the community to see all of the improvements that have been made to our auditorium, thanks to the recent construction referendum.  We have new seating, lighting and sound systems to make the experience more enjoyable for everyone."

Helping Hands for Hunger Feeds 220 FamiliesFood basket

The Manchester Township High School Peer Leadership program, in conjunction with MTHS student clubs and athletic teams, organized their third annual Thanksgiving food drive, known as Helping Hands for Hunger.

The drive provided 220 identical food baskets, containing the necessary items for a Thanksgiving dinner and more, to Manchester families in need.  It was supported by fundraisers and donations that allowed each basket to contain identical items including fresh produce in addition to the usual canned and dry items.  Frozen turkeys were also provided.
