Auditor Praises District
| | Craig Lorentzen presents BOE member Gary Rhodes with Financial Reporting Award. | The Manchester Township School District received the prestigious Association of School Business Officials Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting for the 14th consecutive year. David Gannon, of the accounting firm of Wiss & Company, announced the award when he appeared at the October Board of Education meeting to review the district's audit for the 2009-2010 fiscal year. In addition to the award, he congratulated the district for receiving an unqualified opinion on the audit, with no recommendations. Gannon said that his company services many government clients and that an audit with no recommendations is a really high achievement. He credited the school district staff for their conscientiousness. "You can feel confident that you are getting good financial data from your business office." he told the board. Craig Lorentzen, District Business Administrator, said, "The audit process is an intensive and thorough review of the district's financial data. The constant changes in state and federal guidelines have made it that much more demanding. This award and the excellent audit are a result of the hard work of the business office staff, administrators and the entire district staff throughout the year. This is a pat on the back for the entire district. Everyone is pulling their weight and doing their part to make this possible."
Superintendent of Schools, David Trethaway, and board member Gary Rhodes also thanked the district staff. "This praise comes to the district because we have dedicated people here who take pride in what they do," said Rhodes. "Your public funds are in good hands here." |

The Manchester Township School District kicked off our annual Kevin's Kids Christmas Drive earlier this month. The goal of the drive, now in its 28th year, is to provide new clothing, toys and food to hundreds of children in Manchester Township.
"In light of the current economic climate we probably face our greatest challenge in the history of our drive," commented program founder Kevin Burger. "Our needy list this year will exceed some 400 children and their families. In doing this drive for so long now it is hard not to get emotional when you see and hear the hardships of so many.
"So, as I do each year at this time, I am appealing to our friends throughout the community for your help," said Burger. "Please know that any contribution you make, no matter what the amount, will go directly to our children."
To donate, make your check payable to 'Manchester Middle School,' with a notation of 'Kevin's Kids' in the memo section. Checks may be dropped off at any Manchester School or mailed directly to the Middle School, 2759 Ridgeway Road, Manchester, New Jersey 08759. The deadline for this year's drive is Dec. 10.

Students Skype with Airman in Afghanistan
It was no ordinary day at Whiting Elementary school, as fifth grade students gathered in front of an interactive whiteboard connected to Skype, the web video call site, eagerly awaiting the moment when Airman Michael Harrold's image would appear on the screen, live from his military base in Afghanistan.
Standing by was Harrold's mom, Darlene Rasmussen, who arranged the chat to thank the students for their help in collecting supplies for care packages to be sent to the troops through Operation Shoebox New Jersey.
As Harrold's image appeared on the screen from halfway around the world, the students excitedly waved to him through the webcam. It was about 10:00 a.m. Whiting time and 6:30 p.m. Afghanistan time, and Airman Harrold was just getting off work. The video image was a little fuzzy but the audio connection was very clear. Harrold, who is 20 years old and a graduate of Colts Neck High School, is stationed at Spin Boldak, Afghanistan, about five kilometers from the Pakistan border. [read more] |

MTES Family Literacy Center Opens
Muffins with Mom was the kick-off event for the new MTES Family Literacy Center, located in the school's media center. Students were invited to bring their Moms in for muffins and to spend time engaging in literacy activities with them. Mrs. Bastian, school Literacy Coach, presented some ways to help children choose 'good fit' books in order to foster confidence and enjoyment during reading. Moms and their children then found comfortable places to sit and read together before the school day started. [read more] |
