Greetings!
What a winter it has been! As you know, we missed three school days in December and four more in February. Cancellations are always a disruption, however, we must consider safety first and the roads and bus stops were just too dangerous to run our buses. Now we are required to make up all seven days by June 30. After careful consideration, the school calendar has been revised as follows: school will now be open on Monday, March 29, Tuesday, March 30, and Monday, April 5. In addition, four days were added to the end of the school year, therefore, the last day of school for students will now be Thursday, June 24.
We realize that these changes will be inconvenient for some, but the state requires that we get in 180 days of school by June 30. These changes will affect school schedules for the remainder of the school year. For your convenience, updated Chalk Talk calendar pages are always available on our website.
On another note, we are hard at work on next year's budget and have escaped the first round of state funding cuts that require districts to use their excess surplus in lieu of state funding. Here in Manchester, we have always operated on a very lean budget and we have no excess surplus. Our public budget hearing is scheduled for March 29 at Ridgeway School (time to be announced). The school election will take place on Tuesday, April 20. Voter registration and Vote-by-Mail applications are available online at the Ocean County Clerk's Website .
I hope you'll take some time to read below about some of the exciting things that are happening in our schools, and follow the links to the left to additional school news and upcoming events.
As always, thank you for your support of our school district.

Lions Club Donates Audio Systems
The Lakehurst/Manchester Lions Club donated two classroom audio systems to the Manchester Township School District, bringing their total donated to 21 systems over the past nine years.
Lions Club representatives Corinne Lacey and Richard Mailot delivered the systems to Ridgeway Elementary School. The audio system consists of a wireless microphone for the teacher, a transmitter, and speakers. It has been proven to improve learning for all students by bringing the volume of the teacher's voice to same level no matter where a student is seated in the room, and no matter where the teacher moves. This helps students pay more attention and avoid the distraction of other sounds in the classroom. [read more] |

Kidney Foundation, Food Bank Winners at 'Souper Bowl'
The competition was tough at the 'Souper Bowl,', sponsored by Sodexho Food Services at Manchester Township High School, with Lakewood Schools taking home the trophy for Best Soup 2010 with a margin of just one vote. The real winners were the National Kidney Foundation and the Ocean-Monmouth County Food Bank, which benefited from the charity event.
Jeff Hanaway, Sodexho Food Services Manager for Manchester Township Schools, said the event was designed to be a friendly competition among the school district food service departments from throughout the state that participated. Patrons sampled each district's soup and voted on their favorite while enjoying live entertainment. About $1200 and 200 pounds of food were raised. [read more] |
