Out Boulder is a Place for Allies Too

Hello Everyone,

My name is Kathleen Sepeda and I have been an Out Boulder board member for a year and a half. I was thrilled when I received the email with the invitation to join the board! I volunteered at many events for about a year prior to this invitation. After leaving each event, I felt such a beautiful sense of meaning added to my life. The feeling reminded me of one of my favorite quotes, by Lila Watson: "If you have come to help me you are wasting your time. But if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then stay and let us work together." Out Boulder accepted me with open arms and gave me a place to use my unearned heterosexual privileges. I am being liberated in the process. As Martin Luther King, Jr. said,"No one is free, until everyone is free!"

Ross Logan, Dear Aunaetitrakul, Jen Pruchnik, and I created the I AM AN ALLY initiative which is now an Out Boulder program that makes my heart sing. Together with Mauricio Shoup , Sophie Combelic, and Barb Miller, I was part of the incredible day at Manhattan Middle School, which was highlighted in past elerts. I am deeply saddened by Mauricio's absence at Out Boulder as he was an integral part of the Ally Program. I am eternally grateful to him for his wisdom, compassion, huge heart,  and for teaching me by example. I was able to witness many young people light up in his presence as he let them know how beautiful they are. Another very special part of my love for Out Boulder is the wonderful friendships that form in our community. I had the privilege of sharing brunch with Mauricio yesterday and yes, his smile still lights up the room! He is a beautiful Soul and we were blessed to have him at Out Boulder; I am blessed to call him my friend.

I am also passionate about the work Out Boulder does addressing the intersectionality of oppression. As the great American Civil Rights Leader, Cesar Chavez said,
"Y
ou can't demand equality for your own people while tolerating discrimination against anyone else." Out Boulder is in the community working on many aspects of oppression and so many other great things that, quite honestly, I cannot remember all of them! I am very proud to be a part of an organization that is working for equality for all. In the midst of all the work, Out Boulder offers many opportunities to CELEBRATE. Yay, Out Boulder!

Please stay tuned for the Ally Challenge which I will offer to all of you soon!

In solidarity,
Kathleen Sepeda,
Board Member

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT:  BolderTalks  - Aug. 13

Bolder Talks Bully LGBT BoulderJoin us on Aug. 13 for BolderTalks about BOLD, youth films & panel discussion.

BolderLife is excited to present our brand new project called BolderTalks. BolderTalks, inspired by TEDTalks, is a concept that collects and shares the insights of exceptional people. BolderTalks is an opportunity that allows people to share their ideas with the community. These ideas are the ways in which we can create an ongoing dialogue between those who share a passion for life, education, and change. The format allows us to start a conversation with all of the unused what-ifs, how-sos, and what-abouts that you've been hoarding in your brain.

BolderTalks invites speakers and performers from all over to provide an authentic voice on topics that are relevant to living a 'bolder life'. It is essentially a platform that allows people to share ideas, stories, and educational programs. It is a concept that focuses on reaching out to people and striking up conversation. It is an opportunity for our community to come together and see what is going on in the minds of one another. More info.

Knitting Man -  Aug. 11

Rainbow knitting

Knitting Man is Boulder's gay men's knitting group. All knitting levels are welcome. A teacher will be on hand with yarn and needles to help you get started. Just bring $5 to cover the cost of supplies. If you're an experienced knitter bring your project and join us for an afternoon of good company and the magic of knitting!

Here's a note from our founder Jonathan:

I picked up the needles a few years ago after a life long curiosity about knitting. My first project, a hat, never got off the ground. After a weeks worth of frustrating attempts learning from a book I gave up. Months later, I tried again, this time doing a simple scarf. It was a disaster and is now worn by a dog but I'd been hooked. I knit 5 perfect scarfs over the next few weeks and have been knitting nearly constantly
since. More info.
