...And the Count is at 22!

Olmpics Boulder Gay lesbian athletes
It's hard not to have your eyeballs glued to the Olympics coverage, isn't it? I'm continually amazed at what the world's greatest athletes achieve.  But what I'm also amazed at is that, out of some 11,000 athletes from around the world, only 22 of them are gay! OK, openly gay, I mean. Which is my point.  That's twice as many as were publicly out in Beijing or Athens, and I like that trend, but still....

What's up with that? I imagine there are many good reasons for Olympians not coming out-too career-limiting (think sponsor support), too life-threatening (think Uganda-and drop off your books, ok??). But maybe more than anything, too distracting.  These folks are athletes first and gay second--and that's OK. After thousands of hours training, they are there in this moment to do their best, to win, to bring honor to their teams and to their sports. Anything that distracts from that would be a shame-for the athletes and for the Olympics itself. We all know there are a lot more LGBT athletes in London than 22. I wish we could all be out and be fine with it and I believe someday that will be the case.  And let's keep working toward that vision!  But for now, I think we should take a moment to appreciate the courage of those 22 out Olympians who come from many different countries, but who all hail from our community.

In solidarity,
Laura Edwards

Out Boulder Hike at Chatauqua -

Sunday, Aug. 5 @ 12:30 p.m.

Chautauqua hike Out Boulder gay lesbian glbt health
Join us for an Out Boulder hike! The event is open to the LGBTQ and allied community. Meet at the Chautauqua Visitor's Center near the trailhead. We will leave promptly at 12:30 so arrive a little early to park and find us. Jen will be in her Out Boulder green shirt so we should be easy to spot. This will be an easy hike, maybe 3 miles or so but we will decide how far and what route to take once everyone is there to accommodate every one's abilities. Bring water and your hiking shoes! Feel free to contact Jen with questions, jspolnik@outboulder.org.

We also have Meditation at the pride house at 11am that day - so what a perfect Boulder day to meditate and then join us for the hike. Or just one or the other.

This hike is offered by Out Boulder's Health and Wellness program. If you'd like to RSVP, visit us on facebook! (not required)

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT:  All Terrain Lesbians Team up with Dancin' Divas-  Aug. 10

On August 10th, Dancin' Divas and the ATL Foundation (All Terrain Lesbians), are combining efforts for a fundraiser for Theresa, a lesbian who lives in Nederland and suffers from severe Port Wine Syndrome, visit:  www.helpingtheresa.com.

All Terrain Lesbians Boulder
The ATL Foundation provides assistance to lesbians in need of financial help as a result of ill health. The ATL Foundation was established in 1994 by a group of friends who wished to support a member of their informal bicycling group who was diagnosed with lung cancer. The name All Terrain Lesbians Foundation, is fitting since any of us can find ourselves on uneven ground with difficult life changes.

See you at the Avalon Dance Hall, 6185 Arapahoe Ave. in Boulder to support Theresa and ATL! The event is $10 at the door (sliding scale available) and will go from 6:30 to 10:30 pm. All GLBTQ and friends are welcome. More info

LGBT Book Drive -  Through Aug. 3

uganda book drive dave ensign

From now until August 3, bring your LGBT topic related books to the Pridehouse (2132 14th Street) and we will send them to Uganda to support their work for equality! Former Out Boulder board member Dave Ensign recently traveled to Uganda with BeadforLife, a Boulder-based organization that works to bring women out of poverty. During his trip he had many inspiring experiences, including the privilege of meeting the dedicated staff at Sexual Minorities Uganda Group (SMUG). SMUG has created a library where Ugandan people can access books about a wide range of LGBT subjects. But such books are difficult to come by in Uganda. We are aiming to fill 40 boxes full of books on LGBT subjects and send them to SMUG in August. If you have some gently used books that you can part with, here is your chance to put them toward a great cause! And as always, Out Boulder can provide you with a tax-deductible receipt for your donation. More info
