It's All About You!

Our most sincere and heart-felt appreciation to all of you who made our annual Garden Party a definite success.  This Out Boulder tradition is jammed packed with activity on lovely spring afternoon, a guaranteed good time for all.  Aside serving as one of our best fundraising opportunities with donations from first time donors tripled by matching grants from an anonymous donor and The Gill Foundation this year we raised over $7000.00! If you were not able to join us, please consider sending your donation now, click here, first time donors will continue to be matched by The Gill Foundation.

During the Garden Party we take time to honor and recognize members of our community making a difference with the Big Hearts Award and our new Clela Rorex Allies in Action Award. Our winners for 2012 were Frank O'Cana for his relentless dedication to educating the community on  HIV prevention as well as Clela Rorex, the Boulder County Clerk and Recorder who issued the first same sex marriage license right here in Boulder back in 1974.

We also presented to the community our 2011 annual report with best of the year highlights and informational tidbits to help you know more about Out Boulder.  Did you know that 75% of Out Boulder's income -that is, money we receive from donations, grants, and proceeds--goes BACK to the community as part of our mission to cultivate equality, respect and well-being for LGBTQ people in Boulder County?

As you can see Out Boulder's garden party is a spring soiree you don't want to miss, after all how many chances do you get to see studly Dave Ensign in a dress?

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT:
Gay & Lesbian Sierrans (GLS)

Gay Lesbian Sierran GLS Out Boulder LGBT

The purpose of the Gay & Lesbian Sierrans (GLS) is to involve the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community in conservation and environmental efforts by creating outdoor, social, and activist opportunities for GLBT members of the Sierra Club and the greater Colorado community. GLS organizes a number of outings and activities each month. These include day hikes, bike rides, backpacking trips, car-camping, potluck dinners, social activities and conservation projects. There are many opportunities to meet other gay men and lesbians who enjoy the outdoors and care about the environment.

Some upcoming events:

May 25 - Happy Hour social at Boulder Beer

June 2 - Volunteer trail building project at North Table Mountain, Jeff CO open space

June 23 - Ouzel Falls hike, RMNP

Most outings are free. We have a web site which lists upcoming events. We send out a weekly email newsletter with detailed leader contact information to sign up for these events. Our website contains instructions on subscribing to our newsletter. We hope you will join us soon!

A very special message to our Trans-Community Group Members

Dear BTGS group members,

I am coming to this email space to acknowledge the great hurt and division that has occurred, and I want to express my desire to step up as a facilitator in hopes of keeping the groups alive and well. Please allow me to locate myself further. My last visit with the BTGS group occurred prior to the official division, but I was present for the conversations about splitting up. Over the winter I had scheduling conflicts, and being a list serv listener for the past few months has
been difficult and saddening.

My intent is to offer up my group facilitation skills from my
professional journey as a social worker, group/individual therapist and advocate for the past 7 years. This conflict has meaning and it is so important for all voices involved to be heard. I hope that you will be able to join us on Wednesday, May 30th to discuss how we can support each other and also keep the vision of Out Boulder alive in both groups. After speaking with Mauricio in person this morning, I believe that Out Boulder can hold  the space for more than one group because the transgender umbrella is so diverse! If you are open to me stepping forward, then I would graciously and humbly do so.

Wishing you all well until we see each other again, perhaps next Wednesday!

Two Mommies?  Two Daddies?

Consider becoming part of this study~

I am graduate student at the University of Wyoming and I am working on my Master's thesis. The focus of my thesis is adult (over the age of 18) children of same-sex parents. This is a qualitative project and I attempting to interview 50 people this summer. I will be in the greater Boulder area between May and July and would love the opportunity to speak with someone involved with Out Boulder about prospective respondents.

Please contact Sherri Lynn Sasnett at ssasnett@uwyo.edu or 307-460-1404 to be part of this worthwhile study!
